Procedures and Routines

  • The routine first thing in the morning will include a greeting from me as each student enters the classroom
  • They students will begin their day by getting settled in by doing a morning worksheet as we wait for everyone to arrive
  • As the morning starts we will have a morning meeting on the rug to discuss what our daily agenda will be and have time to share what we all did the night before.
  • We will follow the classroom schedule that is outlined for each day as closely as possible
  • The procedure for using the bathroom will be that the students go out one at a time (boys/girls). They must get the bathroom pass to leave the room. This can be done as long as instruction is not happening; unless it is an emergency.
  • When the class leaves the room for activities, lunch, recess or any other function they will wait for instructions to line up. They will form a single line, have their hands in their own space, they will walk in the hallway and they will only whisper if they need to talk at all in the hallway.
  • Classroom chores will be done using a rotation schedule to allow all the students to do each job posted.

Classroom Management

Research database:

The author(s) of the article The Use of Group Contingencies for Preventing and Managing Disruptive Behaviors are: Hulac, David M and Benson, Nicholas. The source is Intervention in School and Clinic, v45 n4 p257-262 2010. 6 pp.

This article mentioned that the teacher should focus on teaching appropriate behaviors that are expected to all rather than focusing on exclusively suppressing inappropriate behaviors that disrupt the classroom. The teacher needs to foster effective teaching , maintenance and generalization skills for their students. Students may be more motivated to work in groups. The research done suggests that the use of group contingencies can help create positive school environments for our students. Teachers should use the group contingencies to help foster effective classroom management techniques that they incorporate.

Web inquiry:

The author of the blog is Amanda Leiter. The name of her blog is Teaching Chick.

This blog described a method used during the first week of school with her students. She referenced it as the “center accountability”. She has her students list things that they know already so she can target what she needs to work on with them. She is managing her time more effectively by taking the time to do this process with her students.

This article relates to the first article because she is doing this activity with the entire class as a group. The fact that everyone is involved as a group instills that everyone has strengths and weaknesses amongst the group. Allowing the students to be accessed this way is a great classroom management technique to use.
