Counselors meet with every student through their technology classes every 2 weeks. In these guidance lessons, we remind students how to get help from the counseling office and what to do in emergency situations, we give them social-emotional learning techniques, and we share updates or tips on any new info regarding PGPs/academic planning/college and career readiness.

“Available Upon Request: The Importance of Making Appointments”

  • by Dr. Russell Sabella, former president of American School Counselor Association:
    • School counselors should take appointments, except in the cases of emergencies, so we are able to perform daily preventative counseling (groups, lessons, etc).
      • DVMS: “Request to See the Counselor”

forms for students, scheduled

appointments with parents/staff

    • School Counselors should schedule

“drop-in” times where they are

available without a scheduled

appointment

Determine if situation is emergency:

use “3 Hurts” – student is physically hurting him/herself, student is physically hurting someone else, student is physically being hurt by someone else

•If situation is an emergency, keep student with you and notify the counselors immediately by calling- leave a vmail, if necessary. If Counselors are not available, contact Admin.

•If situation is not an emergency, give student a pass to come fill out a “Request to See the Counselor Form” in the counseling office (or they can do this on their own time)- we will see them as soon as we can.

Key Points to Remember…

  • If a student is threatening to hurt themselves, call us immediately. If unavailable, leave a voice mail and contact admin.

  •  If the situation is not an emergency, have students fill out a “Request to See the Counselor Form” (they can do this in the counseling office during class with a pass from you or on their own time).

  • Keep us in the loop – refer students for non-emergencies by calling or e-mailing (keep it confidential).

  • For all schedule change requests,  give counselors completed “Staff Schedule Change Request Form” or talk to Admin.

Game: Can We Help You?

For this game, we will read a possible counselor task from a notecard. Raise your hand if you know the task is or is not a way that counselors are able to support you. You can look back at slide 4 for hints and work with a partner, if you’d like. If we calls on you and you answer correctly, you win a prize!
