SECTION TWO: MYSTERY SOURCES -- REVEALED

“These comparisons should never be viewed as supporting any kind of racial hierarchy. Instead, if we accept the inherent equality of all, the outcomes must be seen as resulting from policies and practices of our society, both at a national and local level.”

Owner-occupancy or home-ownership is a form of housing tenure where a person,

called the homeowner, owns the home in which he/she lives.

I wonder/notice:

SECTION TWO: MYSTERY SOURCES

Why is this important? Historically, members of some racial and ethnic groups have suffered discrimination in buying homes and accessing home mortgages. A home is a vital financial asset for a family and an investment in both the local neighborhood and surrounding community.

22 of 31

I wonder/notice:

WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF CHILDREN UNDER 18 BELOW POVERTY MEAN? WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

23 of 31

Child Poverty: The number of children under 18 living below the federally defined poverty line, expressed as a percentage of all children under 18 and reported by various racial and ethnic groups. Poverty thresholds vary by family composition and year. In 2018, the threshold for a four-person family with two children was $25,465.

Why is this important? Children raised in impoverished environments are at higher risk for a wide variety of health and social problems, including poor performance in school. The challenges they face in childhood can diminish their chances for successful adult lives.

WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF CHILDREN UNDER 18 BELOW POVERTY MEAN? WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

SECTION TWO: MYSTERY SOURCES

Why might the Median Annual Household Income be Important?

25 of 31

Median Household Income: Median household income, inflated to 2021 dollars, broken down by race/ethnicity. Half of incomes are below the median and half are above.

SECTION TWO: MYSTERY SOURCES (note missing data on NYSDOH for Tioga County)

Why is this important? Median household income is a gauge of overall economic health of the region and the financial resources of households. Examining income for different racial and ethnic groups is important as a measure of inequity.

SECTION TWO: MYSTERY SOURCES

Why might the the percentage of residents dying before age 75 be important?

Measuring premature mortality, rather than overall mortality, focuses attention on deaths that might have been prevented.

Next we’re going to investigate how racism may have impacted our community and how people have responded. We’re going to work together to make our own decisions about what we learn and how we want to respond to that learning.

SEL CHECK IN

The purpose of education is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions.
