What is College Mentors for Kids?

College Mentors for Kids is a national mentoring program found in TEN states!

Each chapter is led by a team of college student volunteers

Kids and mentors are paired one-on-one but do activities in small groups

Chapter leaders plan the activities and lead kids and mentors through them

Activities utilize a variety of people and places on Grounds

The Kids

“Little buddies” are 3rd- 4th grade students in our community who attend one of our partner elementary schools.

The Mentors

College student mentors come from all different academic backgrounds but have a shared passion for working with youth and connecting with their community.

When?

College Mentors for Kids activities are held once a week for two hours. Activities begin in the fall and run through the spring, resulting in about 18-20 weeks of activities per year. There are no activities when either the elementary school or university are on break.

Where?

With the exception of a few special events that may take place at the elementary school, all activities and trainings take place on Grounds. Little buddies take a bus after school and are dropped off at the university, so you do not need a car to participate in the program.

Mentor Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old and enrolled at the university
  • Make a minimum of a one-year commitment
  • Be available to attend at least one activity day per week

Mentor Expectations

  • Attend all activities except in the case of illness or emergency

  • Participate in every activity and give your little buddy your full attention

​

  • Keep your little buddy physically and emotionally safe

​

  • Serve as a positive role model and constant source of support

​

  • Encourage your little buddy to think critically about what they learn

​

  • Assist your little buddy in developing a vision and goals for the future

​

  • Set behavior expectations and help ensure they are met

​

  • Attend all events hosted by the chapter and help fundraise
