Letter (23) From St. Cyril to the Clergy of Constantinople

الرسالة رقم (۲۳) من القديس كيرلس إلى إكليروس القسطنطينية

Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, sends many greetings in Christ to the bishops Komarios and Potamon (Potamion), to my lord Dalmatius, archimandrite of the monasteries, and to the beloved and much-longed-for priests, Timothy and Eulogius, sanctified in Christ.

كيرلس رئيس أساقفة الإسكندرية يهدي تحياته الكثيرة للأسقفين كوماريوس وبوتاموني (بوتاميوني)، والى سيدي دلماتيوس ارشمندريت الأديرة، وإلى القسيسي تيموتيوس وأولوجيوس المحبوبين والمشتاق إليهم جدا المقدسين في المسيح.

1- We were expecting that the honorable Nestorius would come and change his mind concerning the wicked words he used after his ordination (cheirotonia), and that he would ask forgiveness from the holy synod. Even if granting pardon in this manner was highly precarious for him—since it is not permitted to grant pardon to a person who preaches such things—for he has turned the whole world upside down and disrupted the pious faith of the churches.

١- كنا نتوقع أن يأتي نسطوريوس المكرم، ويغير فكره من جهة الكلمات السيئة التي استعملها بعد سيامته (شرطونيته). وأن يسأل الصفح من المجمع المقدس حتى وإن كان منح العفو بهذه الطريقة خطرا جدا بالنسبة له، لأنه غير مسموح أن يمنح الصفح لإنسان يكرز بمثل هذه الأمور، لأنه قلب المسكونة كلها وعرقل الإيمان الورع الذي للكنائس.

For if anyone dares to utter a single defamatory word against our goodness-loving and most revered emperors, he justly suffers the penalties of the law. How much more so, then, he who has utterly apostatized, who attempts to subvert our holy mystery, and tries to deny the divine economy (oikonomia) accomplished for us by the Holy One, the Lover of mankind, the Only-Begotten Son of God the Father, who condescended to become man in order to save us all and free all that is under the skies from sin and death?

فأنه إن تجاسر أحد أن ينطق بكلمة واحدة سيئة ضد ملوكنا المحبين للصلاح والموقرين جداً، فانه بعدل يحتمل عقوبات القوانين، أفليس بالأحرى ذلك الذي كفر كلية، والذي يحاول أن يقلب سرنا المقدس، ويحاول أن ينكر التدبير الذي أتمه من أجلنا القدوس محب البشر ابن الله الآب الوحيد، إذ تنازل ليصير إنساناً لكيما يخلصنا جميعاً ويحرر ما تحت السماء من الخطيئة والموت؟

2- However, we wondered at the hardness of the man's heart, for he neither repented nor wept over the things he dared to speak against the glory of Christ, the Savior of us all. Even after his arrival in Ephesus, he used the same expressions and demonstrated once more that his thoughts are perverse. Consequently, the honorable metropolitans and bishops justly raised the discussion against him.

۲- إلا أننا تعجبنا من قساوة قلب الرجل، فهو لم يتب ولم يبك على الأمور التي تجاسر أن يقولها ضد مجد المسيح مخلصنا جميعاً.ولكن حتى بعد وصوله إلى أفسس فأنه استعمل نفس التعبيرات وأوضح مرة أخرى أن أفكاره منحرفة، حتى أن المطارنة المكرمين والأساقفة الموقرين لله جداً أثاروا المناقشة ضده بعدل.

Then they surrounded him with the inspired Scripture, and knew that He who was born of the Holy Virgin according to the flesh is God. Yet, he cried out in an unbecoming voice, saying: "I do not say of a child two or three months old that he is God," and other things in addition to this, attempting to dismantle the incarnation of the Only-Begotten Son.

ثم حاصروه بالكتاب الموحي به، وعلموا أن ذلك المولود من العذراء القديسة حسب الجسد هو الله، فأنه صرخ بصوت غير لائق قائلاً: "أنا لا أقول عن ابن شهرين أو ثلاثة أنه الله" وأمور أخرى بالإضافة إلى ذلك محاولاً أن يهدم تجسد الابن الوحيد.

3- The time appointed for the holy synod had been fixed at the holy feast of Pentecost by our most God-loving emperors, for the first imperial decree by which we were summoned bears this mandate. We arrived at the city of Ephesus before the appointed day, because it was improper to disregard the royal commands.

٣- الوقت المعيَّن للمجمع المقدس كان قد حدد بعيد الخمسين المقدس، بواسطة ملوكنا المحبين لله جداً، لأن الرسالة الأولى التي دعينا بها تحمل هذه الصيغة، لقد وصلنا إلى مدينة أفس قبل اليوم المعيَّن ، لأنه لم يكن لائقاً أن تتجاهل الأوامر الملكية.

But when we heard that John, the most revered and God-loving bishop of Antioch, was coming, we waited for him for sixteen days. This was despite the fact that the entire synod was crying out, saying that John did not wish to participate in the synod because he feared lest the most honorable Nestorius, who was originally from the church under his jurisdiction, should be deposed from office and this would perhaps cause him offense.

ولكن عندما سمعنا أن يوحنا اسقف إنطاكية الموقر جداً والمحب الله جداً سيأتي انتظرناه لمدة ستة عشر يوما رغم أن المجمع كله كان يصرخ ويقول أن يوحنا لا يرغب أن يشترك في المجمع، لأنه كان يخاف لئلا يتعرض نسطوريوس المكرم جدا ، الذي كان أصلا من الكنيسة التي تحت رئاسته، للتجريد من وظيفته ، وربما كان هذا الأمرسيسبب إهانة له .

Experience later proved this to be true, for he delayed his arrival. Some of the revered bishops who accompanied him from the East arrived ahead of him and said: "Our lord, Bishop John, commanded us to say to your reverence: 'If I delay, do what you must do.'"

وقد أثبتت الخبرة فيما بعد أن هذا صحيح، لأنه آخر وصوله لأن بعض الأساقفة الموقرين الذين معه من الشرق قد وصلوا وقالوا سيدنا الأسقف يوحنا أمرنا أن نقول لوقاركم: "إذا تأخرت فافعلوا ما أنتم تفعلون".

4- Accordingly, the holy synod assembled on the twenty-eighth day of the month of Baoni (corresponding to June 23, 431) according to the Alexandrian calendar, in the great church dedicated to the name of Saint Mary. The synod summoned Nestorius to come, take his place, and defend himself. First Summons: He answered initially, saying: "I will think and see."

٤- وبناء على ذلك فإن المجمع المقدس إذ قد اجتمع في اليوم الثامن والعشرين من شهر بؤوني (يوافق٢۳ يونيو سنة ٤۳١). (بؤونة) حسب التقويم الإسكندري، في الكنيسة الكبيرة المكرسة باسم القديسة مريم ، دعا نسطوريوس لكي يأتي ويأخذ مكانه ويدافع عن نفسه فيما يخص الأمور التي علم بها وكتبها. ولكنه أجاب في البداية قائلاً "سأفكر وأري".

He was summoned by a second letter from the holy synod. However, he acted improperly, obtaining soldiers from the most magnificent Count Candidianus and placing them before his house to use batons to keep anyone from getting close to him. The holy bishops who were sent remained there, stating: “We have not come to say or hear anything painful; rather, the holy synod summons you to attend.” Yet, he employed various excuses as one whose conscience reproached him.

وقد دعي برسالة ثانية من المجمع المقدس، حينما أرسل له مرة أخرى، أساقفة متقين لله جداً.ولكنه فعل أمراً غير لائق، وأتخذ جنوداً من الكونت المعظم جداً كانديديانوس ، ووضعهم أمام بيته، لكي يمنعوا بالهراوات أي شخص من الاقتراب منه. ولكن الأساقفة المقدسين جداً الذين قد أرسلوا بقوا هناك قائلين "أننا لم نأت لنقول أو نسمع أي شئ مؤلم، بل إن المجمع المقدس يدعوه للحضور"، وقد استخدم أعذاراً متنوعة كواحد لم يكن يريد أن يأتي لأن ضميره كان يؤنبه.

Third Summons: Once again, he relied on military force and refused to come. Consequently, when the holy synod held its formal session, his letters were found to be full of blasphemies. Metropolitans testified, saying: "In the city of Ephesus itself, he cried out clearly, “Jesus is not God.” Thereupon, the synod deposed him and passed against him a just and canonical judgment.

حينئذ استعملنا رسالة ثالثة مكتوبة، ومرة أخرى، حينما أرسل إليه أساقفة من إيبارشيات متنوعة، فإنه مرة أخرى استخدم قوة الجنود ولم يرد أن يأتي. وبناء على ذلك حينما عقد المجمع المقدس جلسته متبعاً قوانين الكنيسة، فإنه قرأ رسائله وشروحه ووجد أنها مملوءة بالتجاديف وبعد أن شهد المطارنة المكرمون والموقرون جداً قائلين: "في مدينة أفسس نفسها، حينما تحدث معنا صرخ بوضوح "أن يسوع ليس هو الله". عندئذ جرده المجمع وحكم ضده بحكم عادل و قانوني.

5- Since it was necessary for your reverences, having learned of these matters, should make them known to those who especially need to know them, lest he or his followers kidnap anyone along with him; for this reason, I found it necessary to inform you of these matters. We have also sent a letter written to Nestorius by John, the most God-fearing bishop, in which John strongly opposes him for introducing novelties and impious doctrines into the churches.

٥- ولكن حيث إنه كان ضروريا أن وقاركم بعد أن علمتم بهذه الأمور، أن تعرفوا بها أولئك الذين ينبغي خاصة أن يعرفوها لئلا يخطف هو أو اتباعه احدا معه. لهذا وجدت ضروريا أن أعرفكم بهذه الأمور.ولكننا قد أرسلنا ايضاً رسالة من يوحنا الأسقف المتقى لله جدا والمحب لله جدا مكتوبة إليه (نسطوريوس) فيها يعارضه يوحنا بشدة. بسبب أنه يأتي بأمور جديدة وتعاليم كفرية إلى الكنائس ويعرقل تعليم البشرين القديسين والرسل المسلم إلى الكنائس.

6- Therefore, since reports have arrived, as I have learned, from the most magnificent Count Candidianus, be vigilant; I want you to know that the official minutes regarding the deposition of Nestorius have not yet been fully transcribed onto paper. For this reason, we were unable to send the formal report. But by divine assistance, the report along with the complete minutes will arrive shortly. However, if their arrival should be delayed, know that we were not granted the opportunity to send them. Be of good health.

٦- لذلك حيث إنه كما علمت أن تقارير أتت من الكونت المعظم جدا كانديديانوس فكونوا متنبهين، لأني أريدكم أن تعلموا أن المذكرات الخاصة بتجريد نسطوريوس لم تكتمل كتابتها بعد على الورق. لذلك فنحن لم نستطع ان نرسل التقرير الذي كان ينبغي إرساله لملوكنا الموقرين والمنتصرين. ولكن بمعونة الله فإن التقرير مع المذكرات سوف تصل ولكن إن كان وصول المذكرات والتقرير يتأخرا فاعلموا أنه لم تمنح لنا الفرصة لكي نرسلها. كونوا معافين.
