History

  • Used to be one nation, New Granada, with Venezuela and Ecuador with Bogota as capital.

  • Spaniards came in 1500’s looking for gold, and took from natives. They caused wars and brought diseases, so only 10% of the natives survived.

  • On July 20, 1810, Columbians protested the Spanish rulers in Bogota. Under pressure, the Spain allowed limited independence, which later became permanent.
