Central Virginia College of Commissioner Science
If you have just completed a tour as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, or any other adult Scouter position and want to continue to service Scouting in a different capacity, consider becoming a Unit Commissioner. A Unit Commissioner normally supports three units and draws on your experiences to help new leaders provide the Scouting program to their unit. Unit Commissioners are the “behind-the-scenes” support that ALL units need. Commissioners are district and council leaders who help Scout units succeed. They coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, and Venturing crews. Commissioners help local units maintain the standards set by Scouting America.

Heart of Virginia Council
National Youth Leadership Training Course (NYLT)
Who: Youth participants in Troops, Ships and Crews who are at least 13 years old and 1st class or higher.
What: National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a week-long course that focuses on leadership development for youth and led by youth. It is the youth version of Wood Badge. NYLT graduates learn leadership through proven training techniques and methods tuned for the youth of today. NYLT is "Fun with a Purpose" using games and hands on experience to teach relevant skills!�Learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leaders must KNOW, and what a leader must DO.
Where: Heart of Virginia Council- Cub Adventure Camp
When: Friday, September 4th to Monday, September 7th and Friday, September 18th to Sunday, September 20th. (Participants must attend both weekends.)
Cost: $350 per participant (Each Unit was sent a code for $120 off 1 scout with the season pass)

Scouting America has officially launched SAFE Guarding Youth Training, a newly enhanced youth protection program that replaces the long-standing Youth Protection Training (YPT). Effective May 16, 2025, this updated training reflects the organization’s deepened commitment to youth safety, incorporating current best practices, broader awareness topics, and a more proactive approach to safeguarding young people.
Why the Change?
For decades, YPT served as the foundation of Scouting’s efforts to prevent abuse and create safe environments. However, as society evolves and new risks emerge—particularly in digital spaces—Scouting America recognized the need for a more modern, adaptable training. SAFE Guarding Youth Training was developed in collaboration with child safety experts, mental health professionals, and youth advocates to better equip volunteers to handle the complex realities young people face today.

Cub Scout Leader�Basic Adult Leadership Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
At Camp T. Brady Saunders, Goochland, VA
October 3-4, 2026
Class "A" Uniform Preferred
1. Participants must complete online BALOO training at My.Scouting.org prior to attending training and provide proof of completion at registration.�
2. Participants should arrive for registration no later than 8:15 AM, Saturday, October 3rd at Camp T. Brady Saunders, Goochland, VA. Training will end around noon on October 4th.�
3. Participants should bring a tent (and tarp as needed), camping gear (sleeping bag, pillow, camp chair, etc.), mess kit (plate, cup, knife, fork, spoon), rain gear, change of clothes, and a folding pocket knife, a day pack, and a water bottle. �
4. Food, drink, and food preparation equipment will be provided. Those with special dietary needs/restrictions should contact the Course Director.�
5. BALOO training will be conducted at the same time and location as Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills Training (IOLS), but due to differences in the Program content, BALOO trainees will receive a credit ONLY for BALOO training.�
6. A current BSA Health Form with completed sections A & B. The forms will be kept confidential and returned at the end of training. A copy of the Health Form can be downloaded to your right.
7. Additional information will be sent to registrants prior to the course.
Registration is FREE, but required. NO WALK-INS.

Attire is Class "B" / Activity Uniform
Participants must bring a current copy of their BSA Health Form with sections A & B completed. The form will be kept confidential and returned at the end of training. A copy can be downloaded using the link to the right.
Participants need to bring their own personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, camp chair, water bottle, mess kit with knife, fork, spoon, and plate....) and personal items (stave, pocket knife, compass, medicines, change of clothes, and rain/cold gear.....). Plan appropriately for the predicted weather conditions. Food, water, and food preparation gear are provided. Please let us know of any food allergies, sensitivities, or other dietary restrictions.
Registration is necessary for meal and material planning. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! Walk-ins will not be accepted.

What Volunteers Need to Do
All adult volunteers, both new and returning, must complete the SAFE Guarding Youth Training before their next registration or re-chartering. Units should build time into their schedules to ensure every leader is compliant and understands the new content.

Hampden-Sydney College Merit Badge Day
Saturday, November 7, 2026
The cost of the event is $30.00 per Scout and Adult Leader. This fee includes Saturday's lunch (there will be two meal shifts) in the Hampden-Sydney dining hall in Pannill Commons, coffee time for Adult Leaders in the Tiger Inn, HSC swag, and the opportunity for Scouts to attend up to two merit badge sessions.
Registration must be completed online by a certified BSA Adult Troop Leader. This is a Troop Event only. No provisional Scouts are permitted. All Girl Troops are required to register under their own Scouts BSA Troop number on their own registration (not to be combined with a Boy Troop). All Girl Troops are required to have at least one registered female Adult Leader on their event registration and in attendance at this event.

POPCORN COSTUME-MAKING WORKSHOP!
The Popcorn Costume-Making Workshop is Saturday, September 5th from 9 AM - 12 Noon at the Council Leadership Center. Popcorn-Selling Units can make a fun popcorn costume to help promote their sale! One FREE costume per Unit. Additional costumes can be made for $10 each, but materials must be reserved in advance.
