Many schools have recently started a new school year, especially those of us in the northern hemisphere. Our Spanish class, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, United States, would like to learn about Back to School customs from around the world.

First Day of School

The first day of school is very important in our school. We have a special tradition on the morning of the first day.
We gather at the flagpole in front of our school. All of the students and teachers are there. We say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and sing our school song. Afterwards, we eat apples together. The apple is a symbol of education in our country. Each year we have a special word. The special word this year is JOY. We celebrate new beginnings in the new school year.
El primer dia de escuela es muy importante en nuestra escuela. Nosotros tenemos una tradición especial por la mañana del primer día. Vamos al mástil que está delante de la escuela. Todos los estudiantes y profesores están alli. Nosotros decimos “El Juramento de la Bandera” de los Estados Unidos y cantamos la canción de nuestra escuela. Después, comemos manzanas juntos. Una manzana es un símbolo de educacion en nuestro pais. Cada año tenemos una palabra especial. La palabra especial este año es ALEGRIA. Celebramos principios nuevos en el año scholar nuevo.���
At the beginning of the year the bulletin board in the front hall of our middle school is blank. Then as the year progresses pictures appear. The first picture was of our whole school’s beginning of the year tradition of a flag raising ceremony. By the end of the year, the board is full of pictures of our favorite memories. We love this tradition in our middle school and hope it continues for years to come.

At Sunset Elementary in Miami, Florida (USA) we begin the year with Open House. Open House allows the parents to meet the teacher and see the classroom.

Echo Horizon School
Ring, ring, ring, school’s back in session! It’s a new grade with new routines and procedures. The third graders at Echo Horizon School practiced using materials responsibly while sharpening their cutting and gluing skills as they made their “I Survived My First Day of Third Grade” medals. This has been a tradition for our third graders at the beginning of the school year.

In our town near Portland, Maine, some families host a special neighborhood breakfast for the students going off to school on the first day. One family creates a chalk message on the street for the students to see as they get on the school bus for their first day Back to School.

The first day of school at Cape Elizabeth Middle School is a welcome back. There’s no homework and we have a school assembly in the gym. A lot of families go out to buy school supplies and new clothes. Some families also do a celebratory dinner or meal. Those are some of the traditions that we have in Cape Elizabeth.
At Plainfield Elementary School in NH, we have a community Spirit Day right before the opening of school. It is a gathering of the community on the school grounds with a BBQ, roasted corn, ice cream, and kids playing fun games. The evening ends with a beautiful fireworks display. When students come into the school for the first day, teachers line up at the door to greet them. Lastly, at our first school sing, we sing our school song. We are a small community that loves the school!

In Korea, unlike European countries, your grade changes after winter vacation. After winter break, we go to school for about two weeks and we have a short vacation, about a week. After this week, we’re assigned to a classroom and number. We study there for the rest of the year. Classmates don’t change but our classes change. (written by K)

Øystese gymnas is an upper secondary school/high school situated in the western part of Norway by the Hardangerfjord. We are a total of close to 200 students. You can find us on Facebook and on the web

In addition to academic subjects we also offer a variety of sports such as volleyball, football, skiing and horse riding.

Every grade go on a trip so everybody can get to know each other. The first grade usually goes to Kinsarvik for fun activities and hiking in the mountains. They live in small cabins on a camping site.
As second graders we start our school year by hiking in the mountains. This year we walked from Kvamskogen to Strandebarm and stayed in a “motel” in Strandebarm for one night.
Meanwhile the third grade starts the school year by scaling a glacier. They are given equipment and a guide, and the whole class walks across the glacier on Folgefonna.

The school started 18th of august. We all meet at 10 o'clock in the morning, and we gather in the auditorium. An auditorium is a large room with many chairs and a blackboard in front of all the chairs, where the teachers usually give us information and teach. All of the pupils sit in the auditorium and listen to the teachers and the principal's speech. Afterwards they go to the classroom and go through the school rules and basic information.

Biology Trip
The biology class of our school went on a field trip to Finse.The idea was to do some tests and later write a report on what their results showed them and what they learned. They also collected flowers and other plants to have in a herbarium.
