Percentage problems have three quantities to work with

  • Percent = (per 100) = written with the % symbol
    • Makes it easier to compare values
    • Example: quiz scores (25/30 and 18/20).
    • (Remember: percentages are different than averages)
  • Amount: the number that relates to the percent. It is always part of the whole.
  • Base: is the whole amount (or total population you are interested in)
