  • To locate direction set-up compass bezel, hold flat and in front, rotate whole body until needle and orienteering arrow align.

How can a Mountain Leader provide an experience that promotes support, challenge, and learning for their team members?

Scenario: Plan a day hike of 5-8 miles in length on either Mount Mansfield or Camel’s Hump based on the following information:

  • Sunrise 0634, Sunset 1858
  • Forecast: Showers likely, mostly after 1400 hrs., high of 71, low of 58. Southwest winds 15-20 mph., with gusts to 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%
  • Group Profile: 5 clients of average fitness (able to jog 1 mile in less than 10 minutes). Everyone is keen on summiting one of Vermont’s tallest peaks,and challenging themselves.

Please provide:

  • Anticipated route that includes distinct way points
    • Way points should include a bearing and distance
  • Total distance, total elevation gain and lost.
  • Lunch location

Extending:

  • Departure time and estimated return time (from/to trailhead).
  • Estimated ascent time/descent time.
  • How can you provide the group with a challenge?
