A triathlon is an endurance race that has three events: swimming, running and cycling. The winner is the person who has the fastest times for each race. This year the Weetbix tryathlon is held at Mountford Park in Manurewa. Lots of the children from the Maunga team are competing.

Similes are a figure of speech that compares two things. In the sentences for similes the comparison words are “like” or “as”. Here are some examples: as slow as a sloth, as innocent as a lamb and hot like the sun.

Week 6: Friday 25th November

It is the end of the Zespri Team Challenge. For the past 30 days, we have been counting our steps using a pedometer. A pedometer counts the steps we take daily. Everyday we upload our data onto the Team Challenge website. We could also include our daily intake of fruits, vegetables, water, hours of sleep and others. It’s been a lot of fun seeing the trips we’ve taken around the world virtually.

Week 5: Friday 18th November

This weekend is the Grand Final for the Rugby League World Cup in England. In the women’s game, the Kiwi Ferns will be playing against the Jillaroos (Australia). In the men’s game, Toa Samoa will play Australia Kangaroos. Make a prediction for the women’s and the men’s game. What will the score be?

Week 5: Monday 14th November

What a weekend of Sporting Achievements this weekend! The New Zealand Black Ferns (women’s rugby) team defeated England, 34-31 for the 2021 Rugby World Cup. This is a momentous achievement for Women and girls in sport. In the Rugby League World Cup, Toa Samoa defeated England 27-26 in Golden point over time. They will face Australia in the Grand Final next week.

Week 4: Monday 7th November

The 2021 Rugby League World Cup is held in England from 15 October to 19 November 2022. The tournament is held every four years and the next World Cup will be held in France in 2025. Each team has to qualify for the tournament and place at least in the top 40 of the world.

Week 3: Wednesday 2nd November

Guys Fawkes is another name for Bonfire Night. In London in 1605 a group of people tried to blow up the Parliament building to kill the king. There was an anonymous tip and it was a Gunpowder Plot fail. Fawkes was caught and hanged.

Halloween’s origin can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It is believed that day the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.

Diwali, Deepvali, Dewali or Divali is also known as the Festival of Lights is a Hindu festival. It lasts five days and is celebrated all over the world. People wear nice clothes and decorate their homes. They come together and have family feasts, light fireworks and give gifts.

This week is Tokelau Language Week. It is the last Pacific Language to be celebrated for the year. This year’s theme for Te Vaiaho o te Gagana Tokelau is “Halahala ki vavau, kae ke mau ki pale o Tokelau”, which means “To plan for the future is to understand the past”.

Week 1: Wednesday 19th October

Here are two proverbs for Niue Language Week. The first is “Tāo e umu ke mohe, neke mē”. This translates to: when preparing the umu, make sure it is done properly. When undertaking a task do a proper job. The second proverb is “Kā uka ma mea, ti uku aki e ulu”. Translation: If it is difficult, go head first which can mean not to give up but to keep trying.
