What does it mean to ethically use AI?
Exploring Ethical AI With Students
What Is AI?
High school freshmen were asked “What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?”
February 2024
Artificial intelligence is just a robot who gets its knowledge from the Internet and each day it grows more knowledge somehow
It is a robot that knows the answer to everything
I think it is a set of code meant to help or answer the users request or questions
AI is a new kind of technology that helps people with a lot of things. It can do things like answer questions, have a conversation with you, and make pictures. AI can also be dangerous because it can put someone's face on another person or it can mimic a singer's voice to write a whole song.
It is a virtual assistant

What Is AI?
AI can be openly defined as “systems that display intelligent behaviour by analysing their environment and taking actions - with some degree of autonomy - to achieve specific goals”
- “Artificial Intelligence: Definition and Background” by Sheikh, Prins, & Schrijvers (Jan. 2023)

Recognizing Bias & Misinformation
Bias:
The action of supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair way, because of allowing personal opinions to influence your judgment
Bias in AI
“Every part of the process in which a human can be biased, AI can also be biased.”
Bias in AI
Google Gemini prompt results for “Generate an image of a 1943 German Soldier” as of 2/20/24 (via John Lussier)
Stable Diffusion prompt results for “Toys in Iraq” as of 11/1/23 (via The Washington Post)
Misinformation in AI
AI “Hallucinations”
LLMs can generate incorrect information 3 to 27% of the time
Can falsely fill “gaps” with fabricated information
Misrepresenting AI-Generated Content

Why Do Students Plagiarize?
“How do High School Students Justify Internet Plagiarism?” by Dominic A. Sisti (2007)
Plagiarism
“Using online detection software is like putting a Band-Aid on a bruise. What is needed is a more proactive way to situate information and digital literacy instruction in authentic contexts and use plagiarism as a teaching tool. Rather than being reactive when plagiarism occurs, we need to acknowledge the complexities of using the Internet and recognize the importance of students’ acquisition of these new literacies and skills as paramount to their success in academic settings and beyond”
