Course Development

  • Course development begins with the identification of the course to be developed.
  • Subject Matter Expert(s) (SME) are identified.
  • Course Development Kick-off begins.
  • Development includes the writing of the material (SME) and the instructional design (ID).
  • Production includes the building of the course online.

The Kick-off call/meeting introduces all the parties together. The SME who will be writing the course and the Program Development Manager who will be working as the Instructional Designer for the course.

Course Development

  • Online Courses Strengths and Advantages
    • Provide up to date content.
    • Potentially media rich. Including links, files and sites to the experts in the fields. Multi modal learning is possible.
    • Content and pedagogical concerns drive development.
  • Differences between Online and on ground.
    • Modification of the β€œSeat time” model is required.
    • Delivery Methods. What is the best way to get the content to the students.
    • Multiple instructors. Course is developed by a SME, but can be taught by others, even multiple others.
    • Pain Points – what parts are most challenging for students?

Development Kick-Off

The Kick-off meeting serves 3 purposes.

  • Introduction of key members
  • Scope and β€œvision” of the course
  • Development timeline is worked out including milestone dates.

Courses must be complete 9 weeks before the beginning of the term offered.

This schedule allows for production and any approvals by Online Course Committee or corrections that may need made to the course.

Requirements of the οΏ½Subject Matter Expert (SME)

  • Adhere to the online program details agreed upon by the University and Deltak edu at the inception of the program by using:
    • Standardized Syllabus
    • Standardized Content Map for course navigation
    • Weekly open dates for program consistency
    • Development schedule for production of course
    • Various established processes such as virtual team formation and virtual presentations.

Courses will be developed with a similar continuity or flow to facilitate student learning and SME development.

SME Deliverables

  • 8 Weeks of Course Content (Content Map):
    • All assignments/activities/assessments for each week.
    • Supplemental resources (e.g. web links, electronic documents) in support of learning outcomes for each week as necessary.
    • Notes/answer keys/ teaching suggestions as necessary to be included as an Instructor Guide.
    • Course Syllabus

Time Required:

  • On average, 60-70+ hours for an 8 week new course creation

Scope and Vision

  • What is it the course must accomplish?
  • Course level Outcomes and Objectives
  • What does the SME want the course to do?
  • What are the strengths / limitations of the online medium for this particular course?

Development will be an iterative process with the SME working with the ID on the course.

Deltak edu resources are there to support the faculty in both the development and teaching of the courses.

Course Development Models

Model 1:

Step 1: Initial Meeting/Webinar with Instructional Designer (ID):

    • Demonstration of several different types of courses in ANGEL.
    • Demonstration of types assignments available online.
    • SME discusses with ID types of activities in current F2F course (if applicable)
    • Determine if course will have teams/course projects
    • Agree on Course Development schedule.
    • Provide SME with Content Map and various templates needed in the Development Process

Step 2:

    • SME: Divide text/readings into 8 weeks - add to the Content Map.
    • Add the Objectives to Approved Content Map.

Step 3:

  • Use Readings/Objectives to craft topical discussion assignments.

Step 4:

  • Written Assignments/Project:
  • How many individual/team written assignments?
  • Do assignments create a project paper or are they stand alone?

Step 5:

  • Add additional resources: websites, articles, videos, etc. to add richness and research to assignments.

[milestone - send to ID for review, discussion] 11-13 weeks prior to launch

Step 6:

  • Write the Course Welcome (i.e. overview) for the "Getting Started" section.
  • Write the weekly "Overviews".

Step 7:

  • Go back and view entire content map - does it flow? - is it what you want the course to be?
  • Do the assignments, discussions, projects make sense?

Development

  • Development assumes a 3 week instructional design timeline, a 4 week production period and a 2 week review period. (9 weeks)
  • Other development, such as multimedia (video or audio) can also be addressed.
  • After production faculty will have a chance to review their course online.
  • Maintenance schedules can be developed for both minor updates (such as text book revisions) or major updates (rewriting more than 25% of the course material).

Faculty Training

  • As course developers Faculty will be given access to a variety of tools for their use.
    • Faculty Resource Wiki at my.pbwiki.com
    • ANGEL demo course and virtual classroom
  • Faculty will be trained to teach online.
  • Online training will be conducted in the ANGEL 7.1 environment on how to use and teach with these tools.
