Project Background

I’m creating the ART.S museum app to help people enjoy art events, conduct research, and support the arts by designing a quick and effective search and filter system, a clear and smooth booking process, personalised reminders, and multilingual support.

Research Questions

  • Are users able to successfully book the event that they want?

  • Are there any parts of the event-booking process at which users are getting stuck?

  • What can we learn from the steps users take to book an event?

Participants

8 participants:

  • 6 casual museum visitors, one parent who regularly visits museums with children, and one elderly participant.

  • Those who go out for Museum activities once a month or more.

  • Male and female, between the ages of 20 and 75.

Methodology

15-20 minutes

Worldwide, remote

Unmoderated usability study

Users were asked to perform tasks in a low-fidelity prototype

Users need a more intuitive way to search for

or filter art events

  • Only 2 out of 8 participants were able to find a family-friendly event as requested.
  • This means that for most users, it’s not immediately clear how to filter or search for specific types of events.

"I reread the entire menu and only then realized what to look for in the filters."

"I want to use sorting only if I didn't find what I needed in 3 clicks."

Users need clearer prompts and a more visually compelling way to set reminders

  • It was observed that 3 out of 8 participants had difficulties setting reminders.
  • This suggests that, for nearly half of the users, setting reminders for booked events is not a straightforward process.

"This task was easy, but I didn't immediately see the button to set a reminder."

10 of 18

Users need a well-developed and visually rich presentation of art events in the app.

  • It was observed that 5 out of 8 participants were either looking for or mentioned missing pictures of the events.
  • This indicates that, for more than half of the participants, the visual presentation of events plays an important role in their experience.

"I would prefer to have events like a carousel with pictures and description, not as a list, that I could have a clue what kind of the event it is."

Users would benefit from a more visually engaging home page that includes recommendations and updates.

  • 2 out of 8 participants mentioned they would like to see a visual showcase of event recommendations or recent updates on the home page
  • This suggests that, for some users, a visually engaging home page with event highlights would enhance usability and appeal.

"I loved the app, it's clean and simple, but the main page should contain some more info, personally i prefer to scroll the main page to find smth fresh or some recommendations from people in art niche, i would gladly take their advice on what to visit or what to see."

Recommendations: Event Filtering and Search

  • Introduce a dedicated filter panel with clearly labeled categories such as “Family-friendly,” “Workshops,” “Exhibitions,” etc.
  • Implement a search bar with smart suggestions and filters (e.g., by date, type, location).
  • Use icons and badges to visually mark event types (e.g., a family icon for family-friendly).

15 of 18

Recommendations: Setting Reminders

  • Place a clearer “Set Reminder” button on event cards and confirmation screens.
  • Use toggle switches or icons to indicate active reminders.
  • Show confirmation feedback when a reminder is set, with an option to edit.

16 of 18

Recommendations: Visual Presentation

  • Improve event cards with large images, short descriptions, and clear CTAs.
  • Use a carousel or grid layout for browsing events visually.
  • Introduce color-coded tags or categories for quick identification.

17 of 18

Recommendations: Home Page Experience

  • Redesign the Home page with a visually rich layout showcasing events.

  • Include sections like “What’s On Today” or “Top Picks.”

  • Use modular blocks for quick access to key features (e.g., saved events, recommendations).
