Construction of Junior secondary school

for orphans and vulnerable children in Gorogocho

Introduction.�

Grapesyard School is run by Grapesyard Organization, a Kenyan not for profit organization that work with orphans and vulnerable children in difficult social situation.
Kenya’s new education curriculum called competency based curriculum ( CBC) is designed for 6 years of primary schooling (grades 1 to six), 3 years for Junior secondary (grades 7,8 and 9). After junior secondary is senior secondary.
The first cohort of CBC students are currently in grade 6.
They will sit for the final primary education in the month of November 2022. Transition to Junior secondary will be in January 2023

The silent problem

Upon completion of primary education at grade 6, transition to junior secondary will not be done through selection and placement by Government.
Children are expected to join Junior Sec school within their school or home neighborhoods.
Korogocho & its neighborhood has only 3 Government schools to cater for over 100, 000 students.

The infrastructure gaps

Already the existing government schools are congested. This means they will not have space for children from other schools.
The effect of this means that children from community schools such as Grapesyard will not have space in Junior secondary.
Many children will drop out of school prematurely.

Filling the gaps

Grapeyard has embarked on a construction project to put up classrooms that will absorb its children for Junior secondary education. The challenge is raising enough funds.
The school has planed to construct 4 storey / floor building.
The building will host classrooms, science labs, one large dining hall, staffroom & offices.
One floor is designed for a medical clinic.

The house below was a private rental building within school compound. It was bought by school for space

Casting of the foundation slab
Building the walls
First floor slab and finishes ready for current grade 6 students come January 2023.
Continue the rest of construction to realize 4 floors.
