History of the town

The history of Banská Štiavnica has been closely connected with mining since the founding of the town, as evidenced by its coat of arms, where a silver fortification and gold mining tools are depicted on a blue shield.

Banská Štiavnica was the richest source of silver and gold in Europe. 250 tons of gold and 1.5 tons of silver were mined in the entire Štiavnica region. It is mining that creates a unique atmosphere in the city

Mining Academy

An important milestone in the history of the town was the establishment of the Mining Academy in 1762. It was the first technical university in the world and Banská Štiavnica became the center of development of mining science and technology in Europe

Cultural heritage

CALVARY

Calvary above the town of Banská Štiavnica - is one of the most beautiful Baroque Calvary in Slovakia and Europe. A unique set of baroque sacral buildings built in the years 1744-1751, it consists of 17 stops. The whole complex is consisted by three Baroque churches, 19 chapels and a sculpture of the Virgin

Old castle - A Renaissance anti-Turkish fortress, which was built in the years 1546-1556 by the reconstruction of the original medieval parish

New castle - Gothic-Renaissance building built in 15.-16. century to defend against the Turks.

Piarg gate - The only surviving gate from the former city fortifications built in 1554.Together

Klopačka - A prismatic Baroque building from 1681 with an interesting shingled roof, which is finished with a wooden turret with sound openings. In the turret was a specially modified board on which signals calling miners to work were tipped (fire station, death of miners, festive occasions).

Natural attractions created by humans

Artificially made lakes – reservoirs

Until the middle of the 18th century, a unique mining water management system was built in Banská Štiavnica, consisting of 60 reservoirs - tajchov, which are currently sought-after summer holiday resorts.

Botanical garden

The garden (3.5-hectare) was planted between 1838 and 1861 by university professors, especially R. Feistmantel. In both parts of the garden is about 250 different domestic and foreign trees. Unique species in our climate zone are Sierra Redwood, Lebanese cedar, Atlantic cedar, Amur crustacean, Japanese cryptocurrency and more.

He was a Slovak painter who was born and died in Banská Štiavnica. He was a representative of interwar modernism, landscape painters who were based on an artistic sensory experience. During his life, he was awarded the titles of "National Artist".

He was a Slovak novelist, playwright, poet, editor, literary theorist, compiler of reading books and textbooks, author of literature for children and youth, cultural and educational worker.

He was an Evangelical pastor, Slovak poet, critic of literary and dramatic works, publicist and translator. He became a founding member of ,,Matica slovenská“. Among other things, he was connected with the town of Banská Štiavnica by memories of his great but unfulfilled love for Maria Pischlova. The poem ,,Marína“ is the longest love poem in the world and his most translated work into foreign languages.
