Defination

Depression is a common mental disorder that present with depresseed mood , loss of interest or pleasure , feelings of guilt or low self – worth , disturbed sleep or appetite , low energy , and poor concentration .

Statistics

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 16.2 million U.S. adult had at least one major depressive episode in 2016 . This represents 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population . Depression is most common in ages 18 to 25 (10.9 percent) and in individuals belonging to two or more races (10.5percent ).

Management

  • Antidepressant – primarily work on brain chemicals called neurotransmitters , specially serotonin and norepinephrine.
  • Psychotherapy – cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT)
  • Electroconvulsive therapy – for cases in which medication and psychotherapy does not relieve a persons treatment – resistant depression , electroconvulsive therapy may be useful .

Difference between stress , anxiety and depression

  • Stress – stress is not a mental health condition . It tends to have an obvious trigger , like a move ,divorce , or illness. Stress typically resolves as life events change. However ,stress can lead to mental health problem like anxiety and depression if it persists over long period without relief .
  • Depression –depression refers to an experience where you feel down most of the time which is called ‘Low Mood’ and you have also lost interest in things you usually enjoy .you may also have changes in your sleep, appetite, feel guilty, de-motivated and generally withdraw from others .
  • Anxiety-anxiety is a sense of fear or dread that something terrible going to happen. Anxiety can be general or specific to a place social situation or thing (phobia).
