What Device Will My Child Receive?

Understanding each phase level has a unique use case, Administration and IT worked closely to collect feedback from all stakeholders. Based off the requirements provided by teachers and students, the following devices are were deployed based on the needs of the building:

  • Pleasant Hill, Blue Point, Eight Corners (K-2): CTL NL73tw & Lenovo 300 Chromebooks�
  • Wentworth School (3-5): Acer & CTL NL73tw Chromebooks�
  • Scarborough Middle School (6-8) : CTL NL72T Chromebooks

  • Scarborough High School (9-12) : Lenovo 500 Chromebooks�

Depending on the grade, each student will use technology as appropriate for their age - use time, software and applications are all customized. For example, every student has access to Google’s Suite for Education, however the permissions are configured differently by school:

  • K-2: Access to Google Drive, Calendar and Classroom
  • 3-5: Access to Google Drive, Calendar and Classroom. Internal access to Gmail,

meaning students can only email other @scarboroughschools.org accounts)

  • 6-8: Access to Google Drive, Calendar, Classroom, internal access to Gmail
  • 9-12: Full Access to Google Drive, Calendar, Classroom, and Gmail.

PLEASE BE AWARE: The school owned devices are integrated with the district network, allowing students to connect to school resources such as printers and projectors. Mandatory web filtering is provided on all district owned devices whether students are on or off campus.

If Damage Occurs...

K-5, seek assistance from your classroom teacher (K-5) or from a school technician. The technicians will work with administration to determine the cause of damage and any associated costs.

  • Middle School: 110

Proper Care

  • Seek computer support from school technicians as soon as any damage occurs to device and/or if the device is not functioning properly. Timely reports not only help administrators determine the type of damage; they also help technicians troubleshoot more effectively.
  • Keep chargers in a safe place, away from pets.

  • Leaving the device in extreme temperatures (ie: a car) may result in non-accidental damage. �
  • Students are responsible for their device at all times. Report lost/stolen devices immediately to an administrator or technical support.

Laptop Fee

  • There is a nominal $15 per device, per year laptop fee, to be paid at the start of the school year. This fee cannot be paid later in the year and/or when damage occurs.

  • You may decline the fee, but in doing so you accept full responsibility for the entire cost of repair or replacement, regardless of whether the damage is accidental.

  • Please feel free to contact your school administration if you need assistance with the fee. No student will be denied access to a device due to financial constraints.

  • Following are examples of damage that is covered by the fee and damage that is NOT covered by the fee.

Laptop Fee – what is covered?

WHAT IS COVERED BY THE $15 LAPTOP FEE

  • Accidental Damage, for example:

- A laptop slips out of a student’s grip, drops on the floor and breaks

- A student accidentally spills a glass of water on the keyboard

- A student trips while carrying their laptops and cracks the screen

- Something inadvertently drops onto the laptop and cracks the casing

- Student accidentally bumps the chromebook of a desk while walking by

Laptop Fee – what is NOT covered

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THE $15 LAPTOP FEE

  • Intentional Damage, for example:
    • Intentionally breaking off keyboard keys
    • Etching the screen with foreign object
    • Slamming a laptop cover shut with or without foreign items on Keyboard
    • Intentionally pushing your - or someone else’s - laptop to the floor
    • Using stickers, adhesives, permanent markers, decals, etc. of any kind that cannot be removed

Laptop Fee – what is NOT covered

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THE $15 LAPTOP FEE

  • Negligent Damage, for example:
  • Not properly zipping the laptop in the case prior to transport - laptop falls out and breaks
  • Swinging laptop in case/bag - breaks due to impact or force
  • Handling laptop by screen - cracks screen or casing
  • Stuffing laptop in bag with no padding protection or overstuffed with books - screen cracks due to pressure
  • Leaving laptop near animals - laptop, charging cable or bag chewed or clawed

  • Review the Student Handbook & Acceptable Use Policy
  • You will receive an email from Scarborough School District with instructions to log into your Powerschool account to review and digitally sign the “Chromebook Care, Use and Responsibility Guide”
  • If you choose to opt into the $15 laptop fee, you will be able to pay for this online through your Revtrak
