Year 12 Focus

Year 12: ‘ Academic and Vocational Excellence’ - The Rolleston College academic vision for a year 12 learner is dedicated to fostering the growth of individual strengths in more specialised areas while simultaneously encouraging students to consider their future pathways.

Emphasising positive engagement in learning, the vision promotes the development of independence in academic pursuits, preparing students to navigate their educational journeys with confidence. It underscores the importance of keeping both academic and vocational pathways open to ensure a wide array of career choices, allowing learners to pursue their passions.

Ultimately, the vision encourages year 12 learners to strive for their academic excellence as they embark on the next phase of their educational and professional lives.

What is Advisory?

Advisory is about providing learners with further learning opportunities, developing new and existing skills, providing learners with the support they need to succeed and helping with any future challenges/endeavors that may arise. An Advisory Coach is the ‘senior’ version of an Ako Coach.

The Advisory Coach is the first ‘point of contact’ for all things related to school - do not hesitate to email them, they are here to help!

Year 12 Advisory is three times over the 6 day timetable.

What will they be learning about?

The Advisory program is aimed at helping to support Year 12s while at school and to ensure they have what they need for their future pathway. Whether this is Year 13, a tertiary course or the workforce.

While they do need certain academic qualifications there is much more that we can do, areas that we target are:

  • Academic progress and engagement
  • Leadership (people have different qualities they are all important)
  • Road safety
  • Pathway options (CV writing, interview skills etc)
  • Building Communities by helping others that need it
  • Financial Literacy
  • Hauora/Sexuality
  • Digital Citizenship

Attendance

Attendance is an important part of all learners schooling. If learners do not attend school, they will miss key learning opportunities that will assist them with their futures.

Advisory Coaches check learners attendance weekly to ensure there are no gaps. If there are gaps without reason, follow up is carried out.

Learners who are continually truant from class will be placed in breaktime/afterschool reflection. Should truancy be ongoing, you will be invited in as whānau to discuss options.

Remember, you can check your learners attendance on the SchoolPoint.

Uniform and Vehicles

Uniform?

  • Learners are expected to wear their uniform correctly and with pride.
  • Hoodies are not a part of our uniform, nor are jackets. Learners are welcome to wear these to school, but once they arrive on site they need to be removed.

Vehicles?

  1. Learners need to have completed a vehicle form and handed it to admin
  2. Not permitted to sit in vehicles during break times (on or off school site)
  3. Not permitted to access vehicles without permission
  4. Cannot leave school site in vehicles at break times
  5. Learners must follow licence conditions (e.g. not driving people on restricted licenses!)
  6. Learners are only allowed to park in the learner car park. Vehicles will be checked.

Phones

Phones are ‘away for the day’ at school. This means that during the school day (including breaks) learners are not allowed to use their phones, they are not to be seen. This includes:

  • Checking the time, timetable, texts, online

As a school we are here to support your learners so we have solutions for any situation that the learner may be in. Please do not contact your child during the school day on their phone. If it is an emergency contact the school and we will get the message to the learner.

It is great to know how many of you support us with reminding your children of this expectation.

New Student Services

With the opening of the new extension we are extremely lucky to have a new student services area. This is where students come for anything they need during the day.

If you are wanting to meet with any of the pastoral team this is where you need to come. The entrance is off Goulds Road with parking available.

School/Life Balance - how to get it ‘right’

  • Having a great work/life balance is incredibly important in the senior school. The amount of school work at NCEA Level 2 will increase greatly.
  • Level 2 results are taken into account for university / halls of residence / scholarship applications
  • School should always be the priority over part time work. It is illegal to work during school hours.

  1. In the lead up to exams/Term 3
  2. Teach skills around the ‘how to’ study
  3. Study techniques

Graduate Kete

All Year 12s will be creating a Graduate Kete. This builds on the Growth Kete they created in Ako.

The Graduate Kete is a fantastic way for learners to collect their important documents in one place, while also being able to access important information. Their Graduate Kete will focus on our three strands R2A (Ready to Achieve), R2L (Ready to Learn) and R2F (Ready to Flourish).
