Certain CHALLENGE.

5 of 44

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”

And Jesus answered him, “It is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,    and him only shall you serve.’”

And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,    to guard you,’

11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up,    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

The Questions we Ask:

  • Can God be tempted?

  • Is Jesus God?

  • Was Jesus tempted?

9 of 44

No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it not by lying down. A man who gives into the temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later.

10 of 44

That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it; and Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation really means - the only complete realist.

Big Idea:

Jesus is THE guy, the last Adam, who overcomes the temptations of the devil. This reality leads us to look to Jesus as our sacrifice (representative) for sins and example in life.

12 of 44

  • We rely on Jesus to accomplish what the first Adam was unable to.

  • Jesus overcomes temptations and foreshadows the ultimate disarming and defeat of the devil.

  • We look to Jesus to overcome the temptations we face day to day.

Temptation = “It is always, in one way or another, the deception that something is more to be desired than God and his ways.”

“Therefore, the prayer for deliverance is that we would not fall for that deception but always taste and know that God and his ways are to be desired above all others. “

  • The baptism where Jesus is announced as the Son of God.
  • The genealogy traced all the way back to Adam referred to as the son of God.
  • The temptations where Jesus is assaulted by the devil as the Son of God.

WHY THIS ORDER?

Baptism, Genealogy, Temptation.

“Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easy pleased.”
