Focus Question: What are biofuels?
Think about it: Fuel made from biomass—that is, plant or algae material or animal waste—is known as biofuel. Since biomass can easily be replenished, biofuel is considered to be a source of renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels, such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.
There are various types of biofuels. Some may be used directly as a raw material. Wood, for example, can be burned to produce heat. The heat, in turn, can be used to run generators in a power plant to produce electricity. A number of existing power facilities burn wood, grass, or other kinds of biomass.
One of the most common forms of biofuel today is ethanol, a liquid biofuel that is generated by fermenting starch or sugar. The largest producers of ethanol are the United States and Brazil. In the United States, ethanol is made primarily from corn (maize) grain. It is typically blended with gasoline to produce “gasohol,” a fuel that is 10 percent ethanol. In Brazil, ethanol is made mostly from sugarcane. There, it is often used as a 100-percent-ethanol fuel or in gasoline blends containing 85 percent ethanol. These types of ethanol produced from food crops are considered to be “first-generation” biofuels.
Another common liquid biofuel is biodiesel. Biodiesel is primarily made from oily plants, such as the soybean or oil palm. To a lesser extent, biodiesel is derived from other oily sources, such as waste cooking fat from restaurants that deep-fry, or cook in deep fat. Biodiesel has found the greatest acceptance in Europe.

Focus Question: What is geothermal energy?
Think about it: Geothermal energy is heat that comes from inside Earth. It is an alternative energy source that can be used for cooking, bathing, and heating. It can also be converted into electricity. Geothermal energy is available anywhere on Earth’s surface. In some places, such as Iceland, the heat is so close to the surface it can be easily used as an energy source. In other places holes must be drilled down through rocks to reach the heat.
The heat from inside Earth is produced when certain chemical elements decay, or break down. Geothermal energy is also created by friction when continental plates collide with each other. Areas along plate boundaries or close to volcanoes are best able to use geothermal energy. Areas near volcanic activity often have features on the surface such as lava flows, geysers, fumaroles, and hot springs. In other places, extraction of geothermal energy can be more challenging.

Think about it: Wind power is an alternative energy source. This means that the power of the wind can be used in place of other energy sources such as coal, oil, and nuclear reactions. Wind can be used to produce electricity that heats homes and lights streets and buildings.
Wind power is harnessed by a machine called a wind turbine. Wind turbines are tall towers topped with blades. The blades are connected to a vertical shaft, or rod. When wind causes the blades to spin, they turn the shaft. The turning shaft provides power to a machine called a generator, which produces electricity. A group of wind turbines, called a wind farm, can be used to provide electricity to a community. Small turbines provide power for individual homes.
Wind turbines used to be called windmills. The earliest-known windmills were built more than 1,000 years ago. People used them to grind grain. The Dutch used windmills to pump water out of low-lying areas near the sea.

Focus Question: What is solar energy?
Think about it: Solar energy is light, heat, and other forms of energy given off by the Sun. Solar energy can be collected and used to heat buildings and to make electricity. Most solar heating systems capture solar energy with a device called a flat-plate collector. The collector is a large plate of black metal covered with a sheet of glass. It is usually placed on the roof of a building. The plate absorbs sunlight and uses it to heat air or water that flows through pipes behind it. The air or water then goes through the building’s heating or plumbing system. It can also be held in a storage tank for later use.
Devices called solar furnaces and solar cells can turn solar energy into electricity. A solar furnace uses the Sun’s heat to make electricity. It has mirrors that focus large amounts of solar energy into a small area. A solar furnace can produce temperatures of up to 3,630° F (2,000° C). This heat can be used to make steam. The steam can be used to make electricity in a power plant.
Solar cells use the Sun’s light rather than its heat. When the Sun shines on a solar cell, the cell turns the light energy into electricity. A single solar cell makes only a little electricity. However, groups of solar cells can provide electricity for whole buildings. Solar cells are also used in products such as calculators and watches.
Solar energy has two big benefits over fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas). First, though fossil fuels can be used up, there is an endless supply of sunlight. Second, solar energy does not cause pollution, like burning fossil fuels does. However, the equipment needed for collecting and using solar energy is expensive. The high cost of solar energy has limited its use.

Think about it: Fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas, are available on Earth only in limited supplies, and they will run out one day. Fossil fuels also add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere when they are burned. Scientists believe that this contributes to global warming. Burning fossil fuels also adds other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, to the atmosphere. Nuclear power is regarded as a cleaner source of energy than fossil fuels, but it also has its problems. When energy has been released from nuclear fuel, dangerous radioactive waste is produced.
In the late 1900s people began to look for different, or alternative, sources of energy to power their vehicles, heat their homes, and light streets and buildings. They worried that the traditional sources of energy, such as coal, oil, and nuclear power, were using up natural resources and harming the natural environment. Alternative energy sources include solar power, wind power, and waterpower. These and other energy sources that cannot be used up are called renewable, or green.
Most alternative energy sources are renewable, which means that, unlike fossil fuels, they are not likely to run out. Examples include the Sun, wind, rivers and oceans, heat from inside Earth, and biofuels. These energy sources can be used to generate electricity, to heat water, and, in some cases, to fuel vehicles.

Think about it: Desert environments are expanding in many areas of the world. The spread or encroachment of a desert environment into a non-desert region is a process known as desertification. This process results from a number of factors, including changes in climate and the influence of human activities.
Human activities often play a major role in desertification. The biological environment of a non-desert region may be degraded by removing vegetation (which can lead to unnaturally high erosion), excessive cultivation, and the exhaustion of surface-water or groundwater supplies for irrigation, industry, or domestic use. Climatic factors include periods of temporary but severe drought as well as long-term climatic changes toward aridity. For example, in areas where vegetation is already under stress from natural factors, periods of drier than average weather may cause degradation of the vegetation. If the pressures are maintained, soil loss and irreversible change in the ecosystem may ensue, so that areas formerly under savanna or scrubland vegetation are reduced to desert.
In 1977 the worldwide consequences of desertification were the subject of a UN Conference on Desertification (UNCOD), held in Nairobi, Kenya. In the early 21st century, the UN again highlighted the problem by designating 2006 the International Year of Deserts and Desertification. Focus Question: What is overfishing?
Think about it: Overfishing is the overharvesting of fish and marine animals. The practice involves catching so many of one species at such a rate that the species is unable to recover to normal quantities. Overfishing reduces some species to such low numbers that their survival is endangered. It drives others to extinction.
At the turn of the 21st century, the NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Service) determined some 100 fish stocks to be overfished and a few others close to being so. Some 130 stocks were not thought to be overfished. For about another 670 fish stocks, there was not enough data. Those species were not considered economically important enough for further investigation. Thus, a little under half of the stocks that could be assessed were considered overfished. Other countries were facing the same dilemma.
Scientists have outlined several conservation practices to combat overfishing. Setting catch limits and regulating fishing gear to reduce bycatch (the unintentional catch of nontarget species) have begun to lessen the effects of overfishing. Establishing marine protected areas has also helped various fish populations rebound. Enforcing laws to prevent illegal fishing helps to reduce the problems associated with overfishing. Think about it: Almost 40 years ago, scientists discovered that human activities were depleting the ozone layer and that a hole had formed over Antarctica. These sobering discoveries brought the world together to tackle an environmental challenge of a lifetime. Ozone layer thinning is a human health risk. That’s because more ultraviolet rays from the sun can pass through the layer and reach the Earth’s surface. Excess UVB radiation is particularly worrisome, as it can cause skin cancer and cataracts. UVB radiation also can harm marine life and plants, and reduce the productivity of rice, wheat and soybean crops.
Ozone, or trioxygen, is a highly reactive gas that’s composed of three oxygen atoms. You can find some ozone near Earth’s surface, but most is concentrated in the Earth’s stratosphere. At ground level, ozone is a poisonous molecule to humans and can damage the lungs when inhaled. Yet, it’s an essential and protective at 31 miles above the ground. At the stratospheric level, it connects with other ozone molecules in a cover known as the ozone layer. These ozone molecules absorb UV radiation, acting as a sunscreen for life on Earth.
In the 1960s and 70s, researchers began discovering that certain substances — particularly manmade industrial chemicals — disrupt ozone molecules. These substances break down ozone molecules by stripping away one of the oxygen atoms. Over time, these reactions can make the ozone layer less stable .Decades later, the ozone hole has come a long way since its dire outlook in the 1980s. But it's not a cause for celebration just yet. For example, people involved in the pet trade often import nonnative species. Insects may get in the wood of shipping crates and then be released in a new part of the world. Focus Question: How do human actions cause eutrophication?
Think about it: Plant fertilizers help plants grow, but they can also end up in aquatic ecosystems by accident. These fertilizers add extra nutrients and chemicals to the water that harm aquatic ecosystems in a variety of ways. Careful fertilizer use and some awareness of the negative impacts of fertilizer on aquatic ecosystem help control this increasingly common problem.
Fertilizer travels into aquatic ecosystems through water. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that fertilizer from crops runs off into nearby streams and ditches, which then drain into nearby lakes and other aquatic ecosystems. Fertilizers from lawns also run off into marine environments, according to the EPA. Fertilizers contain nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Since fertilizers help plants grow, they also cause algal blooms in aquatic ecosystems.
As excess fertilizers enter aquatic ecosystems and cause algal blooms, the algae die off more rapidly. As algae decompose, they remove oxygen from the water, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council and the EPA. A lack of oxygen in the water then kills off fish and other aquatic life. The fertilizer can also leach into the groundwater and contaminate drinking supplies.

Think about it: We approached this year looking at the Earth as one system made up of 4 unique but inseparable subsystems, the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and the biosphere. We have studied the atmosphere in our lessons on weather and climate, and our biosphere in the lessons on biomes and ecosystems. We extended this understanding to how human activities are affecting the climates, biomes and ecosystems and the need to act swiftly to stabilize the Earth’s systems from global warming for Earth’s long term health.
Over the course of next few weeks we will consider what systems make up the hydrosphere and the geosphere, and explore the reality that the Earth has reached the inevitable point where human activity has an impact on all systems on our planet and that our individual actions will give a healthy, or unhealthy Earth to future generations.

Focus Question: How does human activity affect the oceans?
Think about it: Human activities are threatening the health of the world's oceans. More than 80 percent of marine pollution comes from land-based activities. From coral bleaching to sea level rise, entire marine ecosystems are rapidly changing.
THREATS: Global warming is causing alterations in ocean chemistry and many oceanic processes, and it is threatening many species of marine animals that cannot cope with higher temperatures. Overfishing is a serious problem in many parts of the world. Conservationists advocate creating expansive marine reserves to protect the biodiversity of the oceans. Global warming is causing sea levels to rise, threatening coastal population centers. Many pesticides and nutrients used in agriculture end up in the coastal waters, resulting in oxygen depletion that kills marine plants and shellfish. Factories and industrial plants discharge sewage and other runoff into the oceans. Oil spills pollute the oceans, though U.S. water-sewage treatment plants discharge twice as much oil each year as tanker spills. Air pollution is responsible for almost one-third of the toxic contaminants and nutrients that enter coastal areas and oceans. Invasive species such as poisonous algae, cholera, and countless plants and animals have entered harbor waters and disrupted the ecological balance.
SOLUTIONS: Establish marine parks to protect biodiversity. Reduce destructive fishing practices such as trawling. Minimize the use of military sonar that can harm or kill whales and other marine mammals. Help fishers to maintain their livelihoods by incorporating conservation efforts. Install measures to reduce the amount of fish caught accidentally.

Think about it: Want to help stop global warming? Here are simple things you can do and how much carbon dioxide you'll save doing them. Change a light -Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Drive less - Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don't drive! Recycle more - You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste. Check your tires - Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Use less hot water - It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by taking shorter and cooler showers and washing your clothes in cold or warm instead of hot water (more than 500 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year). Avoid products with a lot of packaging - You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you reduce your garbage by 10 percent. Adjust your thermostat - Moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Plant a tree - A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Turn off electronic devices - Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer, when you're not using them, will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Focus Question: How can we help to slow and stop climate change?
Think about it: We can't stop global warming and climate change completely, because the extra greenhouse gases in our atmosphere will continue to cause the planet to warm for awhile. But we can make better choices, individually and together, that will result in less greenhouse gas being released, and this will help make the problem smaller than it would otherwise be. We can also take steps to prepare ourselves and our communities for change. (Note: Tomorrow’s lesson will be about more specific things we can do individually and together to make a difference)
How do we make this happen? In order to reduce the amount of warming, we need to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2) stays in the atmosphere for 30 to 100 years until most of it is removed by plants and natural processes, although about 20% of it can stay for thousands of years. Methane is a stronger greenhouse gas, but it breaks down in about 10 years. So greenhouse gases are removed from the atmosphere through natural processes. Right now, we put more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere than is taken out by natural processes. So even if we put a little less in, the concentrations will continue to rise over time. We have to put a lot less in if we want to have less greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. And we have to start now. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to cut the gases enough to reach our goal – do you see why?

Focus Question: What is ocean acidification and why is it threatening the oceans?
Think about it: Ocean acidification refers to a reduction in the pH of the ocean over an extended period of time, caused primarily by uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. For more than 200 years, or since the industrial revolution, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has increased due to the burning of fossil fuels and land use change. The ocean absorbs about 30 percent of the CO2 that is released in the atmosphere, and as levels of atmospheric CO2 increase, so do the levels in the ocean. When CO2 is absorbed by seawater, a series of chemical reactions occur resulting in the increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This increase causes the seawater to become more acidic and causes carbonate ions to be relatively less abundant.
Carbonate ions are an important building block of structures such as sea shells and coral skeletons. Decreases in carbonate ions can make building and maintaining shells and other calcium carbonate structures difficult for calcifying organisms such as oysters, clams, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.
These changes in ocean chemistry can affect the behavior of non-calcifying organisms as well. Certain fish's ability to detect predators is decreased in more acidic waters. When these organisms are at risk, the entire food web may also be at risk. Ocean acidification is affecting the entire world’s oceans, including coastal estuaries and waterways. Many economies are dependent on fish and shellfish and people worldwide rely on food from the ocean as their primary source of protein.

Focus Question: What is being done internationally to slow global warming and climate change?
Think about it: Our climate is changing around us faster than predicted. From more frequent and extreme storms to unprecedented heatwaves, we’re feeling the impacts of human-caused global warming. But we still have time to change course. We can avoid more dire impacts of climate change by limiting warming to 1.5° C (2.7° F) according to a recent report by the United Nations. The world is already 1° C (1.8° F) hotter than it was between 1850 and 1900, the pre-industrial era. And while there’s no question that limiting warming to 1.5° C will be difficult, there’s also no question that we have the technology needed to do it—and that it’s worth it.
In 2015, 196 countries signed on to a single, sweeping plan that aims to keep global warming to well below 2° C (3.6° F)—or even 1.5° C. The unprecedented Paris Agreement builds on decades of gradual work by the international community to combat climate change and adapt to its impacts. World leaders must work together to eliminate the release of heat-trapping carbon by 2050—and, ideally, by 2040. To do this, they will need to strengthen their commitments to cut emissions over time.
But climate change is not a problem that governments can solve alone; we need collaboration across regional governments, businesses, and communities as well. We also need to help wildlife and people cope with a rapidly warming planet. Global Warming

Think about it: Scientific data supports the realization that due to human activity we are in a period of intense global warming leading to accelerated global climate change. In class we have studied the basics of the Earth’s biosphere, weather, climate and ecosystems, and learned that Earth’s biosphere and ecosystems are balanced by the organisms that grow and interact within them. We have also studied the basics of the abiotic factors in the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere that make up weather patterns and ultimately the climate for the many ecosystems found on Earth.
In our studies we investigated how living organisms genetically pass on adaptations needed to survive to their offspring. Adaptations of organisms to the wide variety of Earth’s ecosystems are unique and help offspring survive and reproduce. These adaptations are passed to future generations. When change comes gradually, the offspring with the most fit adaptations are the ones to survive and reproduce. This ultimately keeps Earth’s ecosystems balanced.
Human activities have increased global warming, and subsequently climate change, to a pace that is too fast for organisms and their ecosystems to adapt to. Since organisms need time to adapt, and ecosystems need time to rebalance, global warming needs to be immediately and significantly reduced. We understand the science, and have/are developing the technology to make this happen. The important questions are, can we get everyone to help and can we start making a difference right now?

Think about it: Acid rain is a form of air pollution. When coal and petroleum are burned in automobiles, electric power plants, and factories, they release certain harmful gases into the air. These gases combine with the oxygen and water in the air. When the water in the air comes down as rain, sleet, hail, or snow, it carries with it these gases. This is known as acid rain. Acid rain is very damaging to all life forms.
Acid rain can pollute lakes and streams, killing the fish and other organisms that live in them. Acid rain also damages various kinds of vegetation, including farm crops and trees. In addition, acid rain corrodes, or wears away, surfaces of buildings and other structures.
By the early 1990s tens of thousands of lakes had been destroyed by acid rain. The problem has been most severe in Norway, Sweden, and Canada. Think about it: The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines deforestation as the "permanent removal of standing forests." The removal, however, occurs for a variety of different reasons and has a variety of devastating consequences.
Deforestation is the clearing, destroying, or otherwise removal of trees through deliberate, natural, or accidental means. It can occur in any area densely populated by trees and other plant life, but the majority of it is currently happening in the Amazon rainforest.
The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.
Deforestation occurs for a number of reasons, including farming, with 80% of deforestation resulting from extensive cattle ranching, and logging for materials and development. It has been happening for thousands of years, arguably since man began converting from hunter/gatherer to agricultural based societies, and required larger, unobstructed tracks of land to accommodate cattle, crops, and housing. Think about it: The Earth’s climate is always changing, and changes from natural causes are usually gradual. Some human activities, however, are speeding things up. Burning fossil fuels like oil, for example, upsets the balance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as they trap heat in the atmosphere. As a result, the global climate is becoming warmer. Over the past 100 years, Earth has warmed by about 1º F. However, right now, the change in the earth's climate is still small.
Scientists believe that with global warming, we can expect more severe weather patterns including heat waves, hurricanes, floods, and drought. The oceans may become more acid. Weather events like these can increase health risks, damage economies, destroy habitats, and affect our quality of life. Climate change can affect more than just the weather. Climate change can affect crops, farm animals, wild plants and animals, and human health.

Focus Question: What is global warming?
Think about it: The average surface temperature on Earth is slowly increasing. This trend is known as global warming. To understand global warming, it helps to understand the greenhouse effect. A greenhouse is a glass house where plants grow. Glass lets light in and keeps heat from escaping. This trapped heat keeps the plants warm even when it is cold outside.
Likewise, Earth’s atmosphere traps energy from the Sun. Carbon dioxide and other gases—called greenhouse gases—in the air do this trapping. Without these gases too much heat would go back into space, and living things could not survive. However, as more greenhouse gases get into the air, they also trap more heat. This leads to global warming.
For much of Earth’s history, greenhouse gases were not a problem. This situation changed as people came to depend on fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal). People burn fossil fuels to power factories, run cars, produce electricity, and heat houses. As fossil fuels burn, they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The first kind of waste is solid waste. This is the name for things like broken toys, trash, and appliances that we no longer use. We can see solid waste - it's easy to see when it's scattered on the ground or piled up in a heap. Sometimes solid waste gets buried in landfills, which are just places where garbage is buried under the ground. Landfills take up land space that could better be used by trees and other plants, and by animals and people for homes.
The other main kind of land pollution waste is chemical waste. Generally we cannot see chemical waste, but it's very harmful. Chemicals like gasoline, cleaners, pesticides, medications, and fertilizer cause harm to the land when they spill onto it. Many chemicals are poisonous to living creatures. Chemical waste can enter lakes, rivers, and other water sources. This hurts wildlife and humans who use the water.

Agriculture is one of the major sources of water pollution. The fertilizers given to the crops for better growth are washed into rivers and lakes, which in turn pollutes the water.
There are many chemicals that are naturally found in these bodies of water. Today water may be polluted by nitrates, phosphates, oil, acid rain, and debris such as sediment, fallen logs and so on. Think about it: Pollution is a global problem. Although urban areas are usually more polluted than the countryside, pollution can spread to remote places where no people live. For example, pesticides and other chemicals have been found in the Antarctic ice sheet. In the middle of the northern Pacific Ocean, a huge collection of microscopic plastic particles forms what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Air and water currents carry pollution. Ocean currents and migrating fish carry marine pollutants far and wide. Winds can pick up radioactive material accidentally released from a nuclear reactor and scatter it around the world. Smoke from a factory in one country drifts into another country.
The three major types of pollution are air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Reducing pollution requires environmental, political, and economic leadership. Developed nations must work to reduce and recycle their materials, while developing nations must work to strengthen their economies without destroying the environment. Developed and developing countries must work together toward the common goal of protecting the environment for future use.

Think about it: Biodiversity is short for “biological diversity.” It is a big word that essentially means the variety the living things making up a particular habitat or part of the world.
The biodiversity of plants, animals and other living things greatly impacts a habitat’s ability to thrive. Typically, the more variety found in the habitat, the better productivity within that habitat, or ecosystem. And thriving ecosystems are very important to us as humans. Many species are involved in providing us with essential items such as our food and medicine.

Focus Question: What are Aquatic biomes?
Think about it: Recall that terrestrial biomes are defined by their climate. That's because plants and animals are adapted for certain amounts of temperature and moisture. However, would aquatic biomes be classified in the same way? No, that wouldn't make much sense—all parts of an aquatic environment have plenty of water. Aquatic biomes can be generally classified based on the amount of salt in the water. Freshwater biomes have less than 1% salt and are typical of ponds and lakes, streams and rivers, and wetlands. Marine biomes have more salt and are characteristic of the oceans, coral reefs, and estuaries. Most aquatic organisms do not have to deal with extremes of temperature or moisture. The temperate deciduous forest is a biome that is always changing. It has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. Winters are cold and summers are warm. Temperate deciduous forests get between 30 and 60 inches of precipitation a year. Precipitation in this biome happens year round. Because the soil is very fertile and hardwood trees are good for building, this biome has some of the world's largest population centers in it.

Think about it: Plants and animals living in the taiga must be able to adapt to cold winters with snow, warm summers and a relatively short growing seasons. There is some permafrost and layers of rock just below the surface in some parts of the taiga making drainage difficult. The Taiga biome receives limited precipitation but it has many lakes and swamps that will attract birds. The soil is quite acidic and has few minerals. It is covered by a deep layer of partially decomposed conifer needles.

Think about it: Vegetation (plants and trees) affects climate by slowing winds, absorbing sunlight and releasing water vapor into the air. Areas with vegetation tend to heat up more slowly, and cool less quickly, than areas without vegetation. Think about it: Remember that the altitude is the height or the elevation of a place, object or point in relation to sea level or ground level while climate is the actual average condition of the weather at such place usually over a period of time as unveiled by the temperature, the wind velocity, as well as the precipitation. So, usually, as the altitude or elevation increases, the weather gets colder and in fact the climate becomes naturally harsher with more intense weathering such as windier and colder. Think about it: The climate where you live is called regional climate. It is the average weather in a place over more than thirty years. To describe the regional climate of a place, people often tell what the temperatures are like over the seasons, how windy it is, and how much rain or snow falls. The climate of a region depends on many factors including the amount of sunlight it receives, its height above sea level, the shape of the land, and how close it is to oceans. Think about it: Many factors influence the climate of a region. The most important factor is latitude because different latitudes receive different amounts of solar radiation. The Equator receives the most solar radiation. Days are equally long year-round and the Sun is just about directly overhead at midday. The polar regions receive the least solar radiation. The night lasts six months during the winter. Even in summer, the Sun never rises very high in the sky. Sunlight filters through a thick wedge of atmosphere, making the sunlight much less intense. The high albedo, because of ice and snow, reflects a good portion of the Sun's light.

Think about it: The tropical zone lies approximately between 25° north and 25° south latitudes. The tropical zone receives direct sunlight year-round, so the average temperature stays greater than 64°F (18°C) and the annual precipitation is greater than 59 inches. In the Köppen-Geiger climate classification system, the tropical zone is named the Humid Tropical Zone.

Warm-up: What is the jet stream?
Think about it: Jet streams are fast flowing, relatively narrow air currents found in the atmosphere at around 12 km above the surface of the Earth, just under the tropopause. They form at the boundaries of adjacent air masses with significant differences in temperature, such as of the polar region and the warmer air to the south.
Because of Earth's rotation the streams flow west to east in both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere due to the Coriolis effect. The paths of the flows typically show a meandering shape, and these shapes themselves propagate east, at lower speeds than that of the actual wind within the flow.
There are two main jet streams at polar latitudes, one in each hemisphere, and two minor subtropical streams closer to the equator. The wind speeds vary according to the temperature, averaging 55km/h or 35 mph in summer and 120km/h or 75 mph in winter, although speeds of over 400km/h or 250 mph are known. Warm-up: How do planetary winds affect weather?
Think about it: Unequal heating of the Earth’s surface also forms large global wind patterns. In area near the equator, the sun is almost directly overhead for most of the year. Warm air rises at the equator and moves toward the poles. At the poles, the cooler air sinks and moves back toward the equator. However, it is not this simple. Global winds do not move directly from north to south or south to north because the Earth rotates. All winds in the Northern Hemisphere appear to curve to right as they move. In the southern hemisphere, winds appear to curve to the left. This is known as the Coriolis effect, which is the apparent shift in the path of any fluid or object moving about the surface of the Earth due to the rotation of the Earth.

Focus Question: What is a weather satellite?
Think about it: A weather satellite is a man-made satellite that orbits the Earth and gives us information about the weather. Powerful rockets take these satellites into orbit.
Some satellites, called polar orbiting satellites, remain in a low orbit - about 500 miles above the Earth - and circle the planet, moving from north to south over the poles. These satellites pass over the same position once every 12 hours, or twice a day. The polar orbiting satellites are used for collecting information that is used to predict daily weather conditions, such as temperature and rainfall.
The other type of satellite, called a geostationary orbiting satellite, flies over the equator at a distance of about 22,500 miles. At that distance, the satellite travels through space at the same speed of the Earth, and this allows it to look at the same place all the time. Because they stay over the same place, geostationary satellites are better at monitoring how weather conditions, like storms, develop and change over time.

Think about it: An air mass is an extremely large body of air whose properties of temperature and moisture content (humidity), at any given altitude, are fairly similar in any horizontal direction. Focus Question: How does the Sun heat the Earth?
Think about it: The Sun heats the Earth through radiation. Radiation in the form of electromagnetic waves carry the energy of the Sun through the emptiness of space. Where conduction and convection require material to transfer heat through, radiation in the form of electromagnetic waves from the Sun does not require material to move through. This Sun’s energy warms the Earth’s lands and waters which then warms the atmosphere by conduction. This creates warm air rising and other convection currents in the air.

Warm-up: Factors creating weather: The amount of energy from sunlight.
Think about it: Because the Earth is round and not flat, the Sun's rays don't fall evenly on the land and oceans. The Sun shines more directly near the equator bringing these areas more warmth. However, the polar regions are at such an angle to the Sun that they get little or no sunlight during the winter, causing colder temperatures. These differences in temperature create a restless movement of air and water in great swirling currents to distribute heat energy from the Sun across the planet. When air in one region is warmer than the surrounding air, it becomes less dense and begins to rise, drawing more air in underneath. Elsewhere, cooler denser air sinks, pushing air outward to flow along the surface and complete the cycle.

Warm-up: Which method of reproduction, sexual or asexual, help a species survive?
Think About It: Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Asexual reproduction produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent because the offspring are all clones of the original parent. A single individual can produce offspring asexually and large numbers of offspring can be produced quickly. In a stable or predictable environment, asexual reproduction is an effective means of reproduction because all the offspring will be adapted to that environment.
In an unstable or unpredictable environment asexually-reproducing species may be at a disadvantage because all the offspring are genetically identical and may not have the genetic variation to survive in new or different conditions. During sexual reproduction the genetic material of two individuals is combined to produce genetically diverse offspring that differ from their parents. The genetic diversity of sexually produced offspring is thought to give species a better chance of surviving in an unpredictable or changing environment.

Think About It: Selective pressures drive natural selection. Some members of the population will not survive and reproduce and, thus, will not pass on their genes into the next generation. Warm-up: Who was Charles Darwin and what was his discovery?
Think about it:. Charles Darwin was a scientist that studied plants, animals and the natural world (naturalist). From August 1831-1836 he sailed around South America, the Galapagos Islands, Africa and islands in the Pacific Ocean in a sailing ship called the HMS Beagle. He observed on the remote Galapagos islands that animals that had physical traits and behaviors that helped them survive became more plentiful while the others that didn’t have these adaptations became less in numbers. Charles Darwin discovered that this is why there are different types of species of plants and animals. The species most able to survive and reproduce live on. This pattern in nature is called natural selection.

Think about it: The characteristics of an organism that help it to survive in a given environment are called adaptations. Adaptations are traits that an organism inherits from its parents. Within a population of organisms are genes coding for a certain number of traits. Adaptations develop when certain variations or differences in a population help some members survive better than others. The variation may already exist within the population, but often the variation comes from a mutation, or a random change in an organism's genes.

Think about it: Organisms can be homozygous or heterozygous for a gene. Homozygous means that the organism has two copies of the same allele for a gene. An organism can be homozygous dominant, if it carries two copies of the same dominant allele, or homozygous recessive, if it carries two copies of the same recessive allele. Heterozygous means that an organism has two different alleles of a gene. For example, pea plants can have red flowers and either be homozygous dominant (red-red), or heterozygous (red-white). If they have white flowers, then they are homozygous recessive (white-white).

Focus Question: What do we mean by “Purebred”, or “Hybrid”, and how do we use a punnett square to predict what traits an offspring will inherit?
Think about it: Alleles individually code for a trait in an organism. We will use the example of eye color. Some organisms, like humans, have two alleles for each trait, one from mom and 1 from dad. These two alleles together for a trait are called an organism’s gene for that trait. In our example the trait is eye color. If the 2 alleles code for the same trait, say both are for brown, or both are for blue eyes, the organism is said to be purebred. If the two alleles code for different traits,1 for brown and 1 for blue, the organism is said to be a hybrid.
By using a Punnett square like the one on the right we can predict what color eyes the offspring may have. Each offspring has a 3 out of 4 chance of having brown eyes. Because the process is random in nature, however, It is only a chance that 3 out of 4 of the offspring get brown eyes. In reality, a family 4 offspring might have all brown eyes or more than 1 has blue eyes. If brown and blue were the only eye colors, and you looked at a large population of people, you would then see the prediction was true, 3 out of 4 people had brown eyes.

DNA is the material that carries all the information about how a living thing will look and function. For instance, DNA in humans determines such things as what color the eyes are and how the lungs work. Each piece of information is carried on a different section of the DNA. These sections are called genes.
DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is in every cell of every living thing. DNA is found in structures of the cell called chromosomes. Both DNA and chromosomes are tiny. Scientists need to use very powerful microscopes to see them.

Think about it: Chromosomes are tiny, threadlike structures inside most cells of every organism, or living thing. Chromosomes carry information about the organism in units called genes. When living things reproduce, they pass their genes along to their offspring. In animals and plants, chromosomes are located inside the nucleus, or central structure, of each cell. A material called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) makes up most of each chromosome. Plant and animal chromosomes also contain a material called ribonucleic acid (RNA) and some proteins. Within the earth's geosphere are sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, which are in a constant state of recycling. The earth's geosphere interacts with the other parts of the earth's system including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and the cryosphere. Included in the geosphere are the lithosphere, the pedospheres, and the interior. The geosphere is in a constant state of motion.

Warm-up: What is the Hydrosphere?
Think about it: The hydrosphere is the total amount of water on a planet. The hydrosphere includes water that is on the surface of the planet, underground, and in the air. A planet's hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor, or ice. On Earth, liquid water exists on the surface in the form of oceans, lakes and rivers. It also exists below ground—as groundwater, in wells and aquifers. Water vapor is most visible as clouds and fog. The frozen part of Earth's hydrosphere is made of ice: glaciers, ice caps and icebergs. The frozen part of the hydrosphere has its own name, the cryosphere. Water moves through the hydrosphere in a cycle. Water collects in clouds, then falls to Earth in the form of rain or snow. This water collects in rivers, lakes and oceans. Then it evaporates into the atmosphere to start the cycle all over again. This is called the water cycle.

Warm-up: What is the biosphere?
Think about it: The biosphere is the layer of the planet that is formed by the parts of the Earth where life exists. It extends from the deepest root systems of trees, to the dark environment we can find in the deep ocean, the wonderful tropical forests and the high mountain peaks. Life exists in the soil, in the air as well as in the water and it is found in the biosphere. Although it is about 20 kilometers long, if you look at it from top to bottom, almost all life exists about 500 meters below the surface of the ocean and about 6 kilometers above sea level. It is a space full of materials and living beings that are powered and lived by sunlight. It is the most extensive layer of the earth's crust and in it there is water, air, soil and energy.

Think about it: Earth is a place with many systems and subsystems that interact not only to sustain the many varieties of living things, but interact to create the weather and climate, earthquakes and volcanoes, and other complex earth processes. Driven in part by the energy of the Sun, and in part by the heat inside the earth, the earth’s systems create cycles (water, rock, biogeochemical, chemical and life) that take place every day, and have a profound effect on the surface and the interior of the earth. Over time scientists have recognized four major systems, each of which have their own basic qualities. These systems are the Biosphere, Geosphere, Atmosphere and Hydrosphere. Although these spheres have basic unique characteristics, they interact in many complicated ways with each other to make the earth we know and seek better to understand.

Earth’s Systems
To understand the earth, scientists have divided the earth in to four systems known as spheres. Although each of these spheres has many different processes going on within them, these four systems interact with, and can’t be separated from, each other. The four systems are the Biosphere (Life), Hydrosphere (Water), Geosphere (Land) and the Atmosphere (Air). Scientists need to know how the processes of the earth work in order to protect the balance the earth systems and therefore the life on earth. Looking at the earth systems as individual but interconnected spheres helps understand the delicate balance.

Scientists divide the earth in 4 spheres which each have individual systems but also work together.
The four sphere systems are the Biosphere (Life), Hydrosphere (Water), Geosphere (Land) and the Atmosphere (Air).

Think about it: System interactions have two components: input that enters the system from the outside, and output that leaves the system for the environment. If no matter or energy can enter or leave a system, the system is a closed system. If matter and/or energy can enter and leave a system, the system is an open system.
The earth system as a whole is a closed system. ... Virtually no mass is exchanged between the Earth system and the rest of the universe (except for an occasional meteorite). However, energy in the form of solar radiation passes from the Sun, through the atmosphere to the surface.(1)

Warm-up: What is the carbon cycle?
Think about it: Carbon is the chemical backbone of all life on Earth. All of the carbon we currently have on Earth is the same amount we have always had. When new life is formed, carbon forms key molecules like protein and DNA. It's also found in our atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide or CO2. The carbon cycle is nature's way of reusing carbon atoms, which travel from the atmosphere into organisms in the Earth and then back into the atmosphere over and over again. Most carbon is stored in rocks and sediments, while the rest is stored in the ocean, atmosphere, and living organisms. These are the reservoirs, or sinks, through which carbon cycles. The ocean is a giant carbon sink that absorbs carbon. Marine organisms from marsh plants to fish, from seaweed to birds, also produce carbon through living and dying.
