Farming

Farming is a common threat to wetland areas. Draining wetlands for the purpose of agriculture is a common practice in many countries, including Australia (Cooper and Moore, 2003). This practice is estimated to have reduced 87% of wetland areas and has lead to species decline and increased incidences of flooding (Cooper and Moore, 2003).

Rising Water Levels

Rising water levels are a threat to

the wetlands. In normal environmental conditions, wetland areas are capable of keeping up with changing sea levels; however, impacts of global warming have rapidly raised sea levels and threaten to drown many wetland areas (Schoell, 2019).

Urbanization

Urbanization is a large threat facing Wetland areas. The increased development of costal cities brings an urban challenge to wetlands. As wetlands attempt to retreat for survival, urbanization makes it difficult or impossible for this to occur (Schoell, 2019). This urbanization leads to shoreline hardening and can destroy wetlands over time (Schoell, 2019).

Outside Species

Aggressive outside species are a common threat to the wetlands. Both exotic plants and animals can change, alter, or damage wetland areas (NPS, N.D.). Exotic plants can destroy native plants; while, exotic animals can “out-compete” native animals (NPS, N.D.). Finally, live stock grazing can remove plants at such high rates that soil erodes in wetland areas, which can lead to a host of issues for the wetlands (NPS, N.D.).
