SCGSR Program

The Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program provides funding to support PhD students at DOE laboratories for up to 1 year.

The SCGSR program supports students to pursue research at a DOE lab on a topic relevant to their PhD thesis.

SCGSR is an opportunity for HEP-Ex students to retrain as accelerator physicists.

  • Perform accelerator physics research at a DOE lab for 1 year.
  • Attend schools and conferences (e.g. USPAS).
  • Prepare to apply for postdoc positions in accelerator physics.

Practicalities

The student should expect to spend a full year involved in accelerator physics research that will likely result in a publication.

The student should be almost finished with their HEP-Ex thesis analysis and can step away from their responsibilities on the experiment.

  • The accelerator research will also be summarized as a thesis chapter.

For a strong application to the SCGSR program, the student should make connections between their HEP-Ex work and the accelerator research that they will perform for a year at the DOE lab.

  • Reach out to scientists at DOE labs soon to formulate a research plan!
  • Contact me for research opportunities at SLAC ( sgess@slac.stanford.edu )
  • Lab contacts for accelerators are on final slide.

Eligibility and Deadlines

Eligibility requirements are listed here:

The requirements include:

  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident
  • Enrolled at a US university
  • Advanced to PhD candidacy

The application deadline for the next cycle is November 5th, 2025.

  • The period of performance is June 2026-June 2027

Students currently pursuing research at a DOE lab are not eligible to receive support from SCGSR to continue research at the same lab.

  • But they can apply for SCGSR to support work at different DOE lab.
