Iron Giants Clash and No One Is the Victor

  • Foreshadowing a new kind of warfare, a battle between two ironclad ships, the Union’s Monitor and the Confederate’s Virginia, ends in a draw.
  • These two “Gladiators of the Sea” fought a two hour battle off the coast of Hampton Roads, Virginia. However, neither was able to gain advantage over the other.
  • This battle ushers in a new age of naval warfare as wooden ships become obsolete in face of the new Iron Giants.

Grant Wins Decisive Blood Bath At Shiloh

  • April 7, 1862
  • With early victories at Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson, Union general, U.S. Grant continued his success at the battle of Shiloh in central Tennessee.
  • Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history, with over 23,000 casualties.
  • After almost losing his entire army to a Confederate surprise attack, Grant beat Confederate armies under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnson.

Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Campaign Ruffles Northern Feathers

  • Bucking orders by Lee to conduct “diversionary” operations in the Shenandoah Valley, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson brilliantly out-maneuvers northern generals.
  • This strategy forces the Union to divert more troops to protect Washington, D.C. to calm panicked civilians.
  • Jackson’s troops marched 350 miles, defeated 3 Union armies, seized supplies, and wreaked havoc all in a mere 30 days.
  • Jackson seals his fate as a Confederate legend.
