Seed to Plate

Welcome to Seed to Plate!

What is Seed to Plate?

Seed to Plate is a nutrition and environmental education program!

As a class, we will participate in a variety of activities including a farm visit, virtual Greenmarket tour, in-class cooking demonstrations and several tastings of delicious farm fresh foods.

These fun, hands-on activities will help us understand more about how all the food we begins as a seed and transforms to the food on our plates.

Greenmarkets

  • Raise your hand if you have ever heard about Greenmarket!

  • Greenmarket and a farmers market are synonymous terms.

  • Who has visited a Greenmarket?

  • Greenmarket is part of a nonprofit organization (Grow NYC), which means making lots of money is not the goal of our organization.

Farmers have tough and demanding jobs, but their occupation has the wonderful pay off of producing some of the best quality food there is!

Greenmarkets provide our farmers with a place to sell their products to New Yorkers so their farms can stay in business, and provide people like you and me with amazing food.

Food System

8

Food system is a way to describe all the steps involved in getting food onto our plates.

This curriculum is called Seed to Plate because you will be learning about the actions that take place from the time farmers plant seeds until the food is on our plates and ready for us to eat.

Step 2: Harvesting

Ripe apples are harvested, or picked, from trees or up from the ground after they’ve fallen

17

Step 3: Processing

The cider is produced by crushing lots of apples in a cider press and straining off the juice made (nothing else is added).
