INTRODUCTION

Magnitude and direction varies with time. AC quatities may be of different shape.

AC quantities which vries with sine function is known as sinusoidal wave.

AVERAGE VALUE

  • The average (or mean) value of an alternating current is equal to the value of direct current which transfers across any circuit the same charge as is transferred by that alternating current during a given time.

ROOT MEAN SQUARE (RMS) VALUE

  • It is given by that steady current or voltage which when applied to a given resistance for a given time produces the same heat as when the alternating current or voltage is applied to the same-resistance for the same time.

PHASE

  • When two sinusoidal waves are precisely in step with one another, they are said to be in phase.
  • The ac quantities can be represented in two ways:

(i) Polar form

(ii) Rectangular form

RECTANGULAR FORM

  • The horizontal and vertical components denote a complex number. The angled vector is taken to be the hypotenuse of a right triangle, described by the lengths of the adjacent and opposite sides.
