BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE SCHOOL2HOME PARENT WORKSHOPS

School2Home has a series of workshops designed to help parents gain basic digital literacy skills so they can serve as learning partners with their child and their child’s teachers. To facilitate these workshops, the following slide presentations have been developed:

Introduction to School2Home: This can be used as a part of any school meeting with parents. It provides a brief overview of the goals, 10 Core Components and methods. It can be combined with any of the other slides if this is not part of a larger meeting.
Technology at Our School: This workshop is designed to help parents acquire basic digital literacy knowledge and skills they need to help their student. This includes a discussion of the digital device the school is providing (hardware), the applications the student will be using, such as Chrome and G-Suite Or the Apple Cloud, and ways to obtain technology support. Parents will also learn about the Internet and how to conduct basic Internet searches.
Broadband at Home: This workshop is designed to help parents understand the importance of broadband and the different types available. The session will also offer guidance on how to acquire an affordable subscription to provide the best possible learning opportunity. This workshop is important for families who do not have an Internet connection at home -- or may have a subscription that is overpriced or a service that does not provide an effective connection learning. It is also intended for families who may not understand how to sign up for an affordable option.
Gmail Essentials + More This workshop helps parents use email for communications. Parents not only receive help in setting up their account, they learn how to:

Send and receive messages
Organize email
Manage SPAM
Avoid suspicious emails
Set reminders

Digital Citizenship for Parents. This session reviews Tips and Tools for Supporting your Child While Learning From Home. This workshop is designed to provide parents with information to help them support their child when learning from home. Topics covered include:

Background on School2Home

Recognizing that the Digital Divide and the Achievement Gap consist of similar demographics, the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) brought together leaders from the private, public, non-profit, and philanthropic sectors to develop an evidence-based initiative to help close both the Achievement Gap and the Digital Divide in California. The result of this effort was School2Home, designed to help build the capacity of low-performing middle schools to integrate technology into teaching, learning, and parent engagement.

School2Home consists of 10 Core Components that transform school culture in ways that support student outcomes on a wide range of measures. Consistent with the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) priorities, School2Home addresses academic attainment, school climate, and parent engagement. The comprehensive nature of School2Home and its strong focus on the unique challenges facing low-performing schools in high-poverty neighborhoods distinguishes it from all others.

Overview:

This workshop is designed to help parents learn more about high-speed Internet (Internet for short), including the different types, uses, and options available. Parents will learn about the importance of the Internet for their children and their learning and how to access critical family resources. In small groups, facilitators will guide parents on how to acquire a low-cost Internet connection that provides the best opportunity for a family of digital users. This workshop is vital for families who do not have a home Internet connection and who may not know about the discounted options in their areas.

It is important to help participants learn more about the low-cost connections and the sign-up and verification process. Eligible participants may want to see the school lunch eligibility letter that they need in order to sign up.

Other key points to make include:

The nature of the offers -- speeds and requirements.
How to manage with data with multiple students at home.
Tactics which providers may try to “upsell” the participants into more expensive plans and features.

Let’s begin by thinking about how important the Internet is today.

Even before the pandemic, it was becoming increasingly clear that the Internet had changed the way we learn, play, shop, and access services.
Now -- we all need new skills and knowledge.
School2Home, developed by the California Emerging Technology Fund, was developed to address the Digital Divide to make sure that all kids had internet.

The following are Important points to make -- adjust for time. The video is important and is 7 minutes long.

Education for Everyone

As we have all discovered, the Internet allows education for everyone -- at all hours.
Even before the pandemic, many high schools and colleges were offering online courses.
And, at least for me, I rely on YouTube to learn all kinds of things.

Government

Online services could change your life but only if you have access to the Internet.
Online government services like tax filing, DMV services and online payment services have potential to change lives. They offer new ways for governments to serve and interact with their citizens.
Digital government or E-government services can provide an easy way to make State services operate more efficiently.

Shopping

Online shopping can be done from the convenience of your own home at any hour of the day.
Benefits of online shopping:

Less driving/save on gas
Time saver/spend more time with family
More variety
Easier to price compare

Over the last few weeks, state leaders have said that an estimated one in five California students — approximately 1.2 million (Gov Newsom article) — lacked Internet or a computer to access distance learning.
Let’s look at this video and then discuss it.

Not only has the Internet changed HOW we learn.
It also has changed the SKILLS that students -- and adults -- need today.
Far less rote learning of facts -- much more about problem solving, assessing the facts of an article, working together.
As parents, it can be daunting….but remember, we’re all learners now.
The Internet provides access to many vital family services too.

There are many different types of Internet

Essentially, they can be put into 2 broad categories;

Wired Internet
Wireless Internet

Wired Internet involves a cable (telephone or cable TV) line into your house.

You can plug it directly into your computer; not many people do this.
You can also add a router so it allows you to access the cable through wireless means.

Cellular Service: this is your mobile phone plan.

You can access the Internet through your cellular phone -- often quite expensive data plans
Great for texting, keeping up with friends, etc.

Satellite

Rural areas often receive Internet through satellite providers.

Plans vary in prices, and can often be quite expensive.

Hot Spots:

You may have a hotspot from school. Here are a couple things you should know about these hot spots:

They cannot be used outside of school hours.
They typically do not support more than 1 device.
They often do not support video or video conferencing, which is what your school is doing during this pandemic.

We want to talk about the Internet offers that are available so all families can be connected at home.
There are numerous providers who have made these offers available to people who meet certain qualifications, which we can discuss.
To find the offers in your area, you will need to visit everyoneon.org/cetf to find affordable Home Internet offers everyoneon.org/s2h

Select the programs you or someone in your household qualify for.

Qualifications

Each Internet Service Provider (ISP) has their own qualification requirements
You will be required to submit proof of program eligibility to the ISP via email, mail or uploading document(s) onto the ISP website.

Enrollment Process – There are two ways to enroll:

Call the ISP directly – phone numbers for low-cost Home Internet programs are on the chart
Let your Trainer know that you would like more information about the low-cost home Internet offers and they will connect with you outside of class to provide more information.

We’re going to take some time for you to explore these offers in smaller groups. - 10 minutes.

We’ll answer any questions you might have afterword.

You can enroll even if you have a school hotspot.

ALERT: One thing we want to mention right now, is that the providers may want to try to have you add features that may drive the cost up; they may also want you to sign contracts or enroll you in the regular plans instead of the low-cost ones. Always read the fine print. Make sure you aren’t buying something more than what you want.

Carefully review the process for finding offers; explain basic qualifications and enrollment process.

Facilitator NOTE: The next slide is provided so that you can provide a link to the letter the school sends regarding lunch program eligibility. You will need to work with the school to add the appropriate information.

Help families to choose the offer fit for them and (if time permits/if the families would like to) assist them in signing up for an offer or offer to help at another time.
Next, ask participants to locate the “Digital Learning Center” page
Ask participants to look through the various free tutorials. Which are they most interested in? Share out loud.
