Approaching(靠近)

20 of 97

News sometimes resembles an apparatus for those in power to promote political achievements and attain social stability as imagined. Today, the utterly positive style and seriousness of reporting in the past make people laugh. As time evolves, juxtaposed with others, absurdity reflects the shadows difficult to discern in the current temporal-spatial context. (Behind) Bright-Side is based on a past initiative of the Government of Taiwan, i.e., sending balloons containing supplies to mainland Chinese as a relief. Related news materials are employed to make audio-visual elements, installations, and sensors for this performance, which depicts the phenomena of spectatorship transformation in terms of thinking.

"Landing in nowhere" can be translated as "Touching down in the present moment." This phrase is an interesting double entendre, with two possible interpretations depending on the context: one is "landing in nowhere," suggesting a failure to reach a destination or ending up in a place that is meaningless or unknown. It can describe a state of confusion, feeling lost or perplexed, as if one has lost direction or does not see a path forward. The other interpretation is "touching down in the present moment," emphasizing the importance of the current moment.

As someone from central Taiwan, having spent a considerable amount of time studying and working in the northern part of the country, the desire to settle down and establish a sense of belonging has never ceased. In the past few years here in New Taipei, I have embarked on a journey as a full-time creator/self-employed individual, attempting to carve out my own space in this region.

Reflecting on why I chose the Greater Taipei area, it is also because of its advantages in resource concentration and the density of relevant industries. However, beyond these factors, what significance does it hold for me?

During a three-month residency in Jiali District, Tainan, one year, I unexpectedly found myself enjoying the pace, scenery, population density, and skyline of the countryside. I believe that as long as I can find a sustainable production style and work mode that allows me to live comfortably, it doesn't matter where I am.

Can one still clearly perceive the subconscious of each action in the transitional zone?

I have always regarded the northern part of Taiwan, where I lived for over a decade, to some extent, as a temporary transitional zone. It has brought me a sense of belonging and security, but it has also made me feel confined and unsettled. It wasn't until I realized that I might settle here permanently until I started realizing the need to cultivate my soil, until I became aware of my reality, that it seemed like the true preparation for landing began.

In psychology, there is a trauma coping method called "grounding," which involves using touch and interaction with physical objects to bring oneself back from intense emotions and focus on the present. I try to document every moment when I frequently go to the northern part for specific purposes.

In 2020, using the same inflatable sphere, I performed "Breath(in)room v2" with the 身言舞蹈劇場 at the Taoyuan Arts Festival. In this version, images were directly projected onto the inflatable sphere, with dancers representing individuals grappling with confusion, struggle, and the effort to adapt, separated from the world by a thin membrane. The membrane with images is like our own filter/protective layer; we rely on this preset layer to protect ourselves while sometimes pushing others away. I try to remove some unverified imagination to see the surroundings at this moment.

Language serves as a communication medium with a common set of symbolic meanings. Through writing, it manifests as actions or their foundations. In the world of computer programming, code is written using a binary system of 0s and 1s. In the digital world, every action can be measured, leading to a highly quantifiable ecosystem. It serves as a tool with unambiguous characteristics, requiring the definition of all events. It is gradually constructing a transitional zone that is difficult to perceive in its vast existence. In this space, the apparent reality may not be as it seems. The endpoint is also the starting point, and with the correct address, you can go anywhere, making it difficult to escape this omnipresence.

The vast expanse may be devoid of everything, while narrow spaces may hide unseen things. Images and sounds manifest alternately in a small space amidst surrounding reverberation from multiple channels. Invisible sounds bounce between material walls, and together with images surrounding from all sides, they open a hidden entrance formed by the attachment of media to space.

"The first task of underwater surfing is to ensure calm weather, preferably with a bit of wind that stirs the sea surface and creates small waves for riding. As I gaze upon the far-off horizon, the vast expanse of the sea sparkles with waves, and distinct patterns resembling fish emerge. The interwoven network of fiber optic cables spread across the sea forms the internet that we use. These electronic echoes transform data into sound waves, constantly playing with the vast ocean of information."

Dozens of surrounding and enwrapping mirror plates alternately show the reflection of the spectator’s face. This is combined with the gaze of an AI-generated human visage that does not belong to anyone in this world, creating a quick alternation of images of the self and an imagined other. Based on the spectator’s distance from the installation, the scattered speakers play a conversation between two people. From fragmentary whispers to rambunctious noises, the spectator within the installation will first approach and then walk away.

living in the between

Hung Tzu Ning x Tsai Ning 洪芷寧 x 蔡寧

Exhibition

64 of 97

This project, "in between," is composed of two works, "A Thin Line Apart" and "Borrowed Conditions."

The work "A Thin Line Between" portrays a tent-like image within the exhibition space and the blurred appearance of the mainstream in society, reflecting my personal anxiety and the desire for stability. The work "Borrowed Conditions" draws from over a year of living indoors in a tent, using body memory to depict the possibilities of minimal living conditions within urban indoor tents.

Both artists embark on this project based on their actual experiences of living in indoor tents. Living "in between" means not being here or there but also implies the ability to exist in any gap. On one end, the text reflects on the relationship between nomadic people and the concept of stability, while the high variability of the tent-like structure offers a unique perspective on the coexistence and interaction of individuals and spaces. It is a reconsideration of "residing," dealing with the issue of individuals and the consumption space of the city, trying to cast a light on how to live within it in contemporary society.

In "A Thin Line Apart," the discussion to be constructed through visuals and sound is that the connotation of the contemporary nomad is not necessarily a group in ragged clothing with disheveled appearances, but those with inner restlessness.

65 of 97

We live in the same place, speak the same language, dress similarly, and act alike. Why do we still feel distant? Making one wrong decision or an unexpected incident can disrupt our stability, and we become our own nomads, constantly suffering from not being able to return home. If I do not belong here completely, how can I live here? The sense of homelessness and rootlessness brought about by the nomads and tents stems from the life choices we make and the crisis they entail, the alienation and estrangement we experience as we bear the responsibility for our choices and become nomads who move for housing prices and job locations, all the while wandering interpersonally and spiritually. What is the notion of stability in the fluidity of contemporary life?

When viewers enter the exhibition space, they will see one space, two tents, several pieces of furniture, and several pairs of indoor slippers. The imagery is projected onto the walls and inside/outside the tents, forming multiple viewing perspectives. The sound changes depending on the viewer's location inside/outside the tent or the spatial position. Each recognizable object is high, but as the exhibition time lengthens, the differences and similarities within the "In Between" structure are captured.

Architecture shows traces of human existence. Those who had lived here may be gone; however, what has happened here will constantly affect future users in an invisible way.

Soulangh Incident that occurred in 1895 caused over 2 to 3 thousand deaths, from which the place was also called “the disappearing ones” back then. Even today, most residents here still try to avoid staying at the historic scenes at night. The invisible incident can have its own presence through oral narratives or ritual practices resulting from the descendants’ respect, fear, or belief.

The exhibition takes place in the corridor between A5 to A6 gallery. Image projection occurs only from 5 pm to 9pm every day to symbolize the concept that even though we can’t see the incident, it is still there. The second venue for the exhibition is at A13 gallery to present documents showing what has happened in the four-hour projection for those who are not there. The wall with various holes scattered around in the exhibition symbolizes preset angles. We have been confined to certain positions in the way we read history. Readers are told to “read in a correct and normal way”. The entrance is arranged in the place near the projection wall so that visitors can also be seen as a part of the exhibition.

"Nest" is an inner sense of security, the beginning of the flowing of emotions, and the home to which we eventually return. In the current state where the global collective consciousness rises again, the group Endospace initiated a project where it uses deconstructed components to re-structure the cognitive and spatial field of the immersive projection, showing multiple situational video works in circulation. The purpose of the exhibition is to reproduce the visual manifestation of the heart and the soul. It is an articulation of the state of feeling discomfort to calmness. In a viewing experience that owns no narratives, this exhibition reconstructs the experience and observation of the affective self.

Breathing is usually an involuntary, voluntary physiological effect but is sometimes controlled temporarily and consciously. When feeling oppressed for a long time, individuals may have intense emotional ups and downs due to subjective anxiety and respond to changes in breathing frequency. Respiration is the primary mechanism of biological survival. The speed and depth are also suitable if you want to be relaxed and comfortable. There is no survival without breathing, and over-breathing is painful, as in this social system where there is no suitable place to be embedded and no place to stand.
