What is the Model Minority Myth?

According to Teaching Tolerance:

This myth characterizes Asian Americans as a polite, law-abiding group who have achieved a higher level of success than the general population through some combination of innate talent and pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps immigrant striving. “

However, this expands to the AAPI community as a whole. It creates a so-called positive stereotype that effectively pigeonholes whole groups of people.

Let’s break it down

Model:

A system or thing used as an example to follow or imitate

Minority:

a relatively small group of people, especially one commonly discriminated against in a community, society, or nation, differing from others in race, religion, language, or political persuasion.

Myth:

A widely held but false belief or idea

Examples of the Model Minority Myth

...APPLIED

  • Why aren’t you good at math?
  • Oh so you’ll carry the group right?
  • I thought you would’ve been quiet and introverted.
  • Why do you care so much about “X problem,” Some people have it worse than you.
  • You’re a Pacific Islander? Are you good at football?
  • You have a tiger mom.

How is the Model Minority Myth harmful?

  • Expectation to go into STEM
  • Perpetuates the myth of Asians as perpetual foreigners
  • Ignores distinctions and differences within the community
  • Harmful to the struggle of racial justice
    • Pits minority races against each other

Discussion Questions

  • How has the Model Minority affected you (or anyone you know) personally?
    • If you once believed the MMM, do you still believe aspects of it?
    • If you don’t believe the MMM anymore, was it difficult to unlearn?
  • Have you ever experienced the Model Minority Myth being pushed onto you? (perhaps in college?)

12 of 33

What can we do to combat the Model Minority Myth?

  • Diversify the media you consume
  • Make your own informed decisions
  • Try not to worry about stereotypes
    • If you like music, art, sports, etc., don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things! (APSA Auxiliaries?!)
  • Use your voice!

At the end of the day, the MMM only has as much power over us as we give it. It’s up to us to determine whether we pass these values onto the next generation.

AAPI Representation in the Media

14 of 33

History of AAPI Representation

  • One of the first areas of representation in Hollywood was the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre
    • Opened 1927, remnant of Hollywood’s fascination
    • Audiences were given an exotic glimpse of a land unknown to them
  • All-American Girl in 1994
    • First TV-show centering around an Asian-American family
  • Challenges:
    • Stereotyping
      • Based on historical events, (Martial Arts, Spiritual beings)
      • Polynesians: provided a colorful background in tropical settings, often depicted as laughing and dancing
    • Yellowface

15 of 33

Why Representation is Important?

  • The content our society views on screen is supposed to reflect its people.
    • Stories
  • When the media depicts stereotypical representation for people of color, they and others may fail to see what’s underneath
    • Media has a big responsibility to accurately portray minorities
  • Without representation, struggles of marginalization are not told
    • A good film with strong representation can jump start conversations about struggles that are currently being experienced
      • Black Panther (2018)

16 of 33

Is it getting better?

  • Crazy Rich Asians (2018) was a blockbuster hit in Hollywood, raking in $238 million at the box office
    • Reinforced the idea that diversity could mean good business
  • Over the past decade, Asian Americans have become showrunners, studio executives and producers
    • Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Nahnatchka Khan’s Always Be My Maybe
    • “Parasite” by Bong Joon-Ho won Best Picture in the 92nd Academy Awards
  • Other asian industries are becoming more mainstream in the west
    • Kpop, Anime, etc.
  • Short answer: Yes, it is getting better, but still far from where it could be!
    • Keep the conversation going!

How it Relates to Model Minority Myth

  • With the conversation of more representation, there will be more opportunities for AAPI people to get in their desired fields
    • Following a career path in media may become more “socially” acceptable
  • Break out of stereotypes, we don’t need to be forced into to traditionally STEM Fields
  • We’re able to put our struggles as a minority on screen, and we can continue to show aspects of our lives that are typically overlooked
