Ice Breaker: What’s in the box?
Model Minority Myth
What is the Model Minority Myth?
According to Teaching Tolerance:
“This myth characterizes Asian Americans as a polite, law-abiding group who have achieved a higher level of success than the general population through some combination of innate talent and pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps immigrant striving. “
However, this expands to the AAPI community as a whole. It creates a so-called positive stereotype that effectively pigeonholes whole groups of people.
Let’s break it down
Model:
A system or thing used as an example to follow or imitate
Minority:
a relatively small group of people, especially one commonly discriminated against in a community, society, or nation, differing from others in race, religion, language, or political persuasion.
Myth:
A widely held but false belief or idea
Why are AAPIs considered the Model Minority?
High rates of college acceptance
High median income
Smallest Percentage of incarcerated people
57% of AAPI males and 53% of AAPI females had earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher in 2018
As of 2017, AAPIs had the highest median household income at $81k. The next highest median income being caucasians at $68k
As of October 31, 2020, AAPIs made up only 1.5% of the incarcerated population in the U.S.

Discussion Questions
What can we do to combat the Model Minority Myth?
At the end of the day, the MMM only has as much power over us as we give it. It’s up to us to determine whether we pass these values onto the next generation.
