Bullying Scenarios
With your partner:
Scenarios
Alex, a tall, skinny teenager, does very well academically at school; however, he struggles when participating in any sports-related activities. He stresses each day when it is time for PE class because he feels really embarrassed to change clothes in front of his peers. He believes that other kids make fun of him behind his back. One day, Jimmy, the star basketball player, secretly takes a picture of Alex without his shirt on and posts it on Snapchat with the caption “Look! I found a string bean in the locker room.” He sends the Snap to multiple students, and it is shared around the school. Alex starts to hear comments from classmates calling him “loser,” “giraffe,” and “string bean.” After a few days of this, Alex breaks down crying in the locker room because he feels completely ashamed.
Scenarios
Two female 7th-graders, Katie and Sarah, are exchanging malicious messages back and forth on Instagram because of a misunderstanding involving a boy named Jacob. The statements escalate in viciousness from trivial name-calling to very vicious and inflammatory statements, including death threats. Katie deletes what she has been saying and sends screenshots of what Sarah has said to all her friends. Now a lot of kids are being rude to Sarah, and a few kids have even tripped or pushed Sarah on purpose.
Scenarios
Jessica has never liked reading aloud in her language arts class. She knows that she struggles with reading, which is why she has never liked her teacher asking her to read to the class. One day, she overhears Juan telling his friends how bad he thinks she is at reading, and that same day in class, Juan and his followers start laughing when Jessica reads.
Now Jessica refuses to read aloud even though it gets her into trouble. She has always been a rule follower with lots of friends, but now Jessica is beginning to isolate herself from everyone and refuse to listen to her teachers.
