Project Description

Jack and Annie Smith live in a four-bedroom home in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The couple recently found out that Annie is pregnant with their third child. Currently, the only spare bedroom in their house is being used as Jack’s office, so they’ve decided to hire a contractor to build a 12’ x 12’ addition on the ground floor.

Objectives

  • A 12ft x 12ft room should be added to the home on the ground floor.
  • The project must be complete by mid-February 2020.
  • The project should not exceed $30,000.
  • The home must remain safe and usable for family during the renovation.
  • All materials used should meet the safety and efficiency standards expressed in the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code and The International Building Code.
  • Design elements of the original home (such as siding, window design, and roof) should be used to blend the addition into the existing structure.

Time Estimates

  • By October 30 - The design of the room should be complete, and the couple should have gathered bids and decided on a contractor.
  • By November 7 - Couple has secured financing from the bank and has started getting permits. They should also have an insurance policy.
  • By November 15 - The couple should have met with the contractor. The contractor should begin gathering materials.
  • By November 22 - Construction site is prepared, and the foundation is laid.
  • By December 1 - Framing is built and roof is installed.
  • By December 15 - Siding, HVAC, and wiring are installed. Building inspector has signed off on the work.
  • By January 15 - Interior finishing will be complete (drywall, insulation, trim work, flooring, painting, lighting).
  • By February 15 - Couple completes finishing touches (furniture, decorating, etc).
