Ingredients 🥣

  • A PC or Laptop (4GB+ RAM, 20GB+ free space).
  • A USB stick (8GB+).
  • Internet connection and browser.
  • Rufus or BalenaEtcher to 'burn' your ISO.
  • Latest Linux Mint ISO file.
  • Backup drive for your files and settings.

Step 1 – Preparation 🔪

  • Backup all your personal files and configuration info.
  • Consider cloning your disk with FoxClone (https://foxclone.org).
  • Have your passwords ready – we’re about to cook up something new!

Step 2 – Downloading Tools 🧂

  • Download Rufus from Microsoft Store or BalenaEtcher from https://etcher.balena.io.
  • Install and open your chosen tool.
  • Keep them handy – you’ll use them to prep your bootable USB.

Step 3 – Get the Linux Mint ISO 🥦

  • Visit https://www.linuxmint.com and select the Cinnamon Edition.
  • Choose a local download mirror (e.g., University of Kent for UK).
  • Save the ISO file – this is your main ingredient!

Step 4 – Burn the ISO 🔥

  • Use Rufus or BalenaEtcher to create a bootable USB stick.
  • Warning: this erases everything on the USB stick.
  • Pro tip: Plug in your USB before launching the program.

Step 5 – Boot from USB 🍳

  • Restart your computer and press the correct boot key (F1, F2, ESC, DEL...).
  • Select your USB drive to boot into the Linux Mint Live environment.
  • If it doesn’t work first time, retry quickly!

Step 6 – Taste Test 👨‍🍳

  • You’ll see Linux Mint’s Live desktop – time to test your hardware!
  • Check Wi-Fi, mouse, sound, and browser (try bbc.co.uk or google.com).
  • If it all works – you’re ready to install for real.

Step 7 – The Big Cook 🍲

  • Double-click 'Install Linux Mint' and follow the steps.
  • Language, location, keyboard, and installation type.
  • Choose dual-boot with Windows or full installation.
  • Avoid 'auto-login' for better security.

Cooking Time ⏱️

  • Installation takes about 20 minutes.
  • Sit back while Mint installs and watch the slideshow.
  • When finished, remove USB and press Enter to reboot.

  • Boot up your new Linux Mint system.
  • Login using your username and password.
  • Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network (Mint remembers next time!).
