Growth Mindset

WE ARE CONTINUING TO DEVELOP A CULTURE OF ‘GROWTH MINDSET’ WITHIN THE SCHOOL TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE THE CHILDREN.

EACH WEEK, THE CHILDREN WILL VOTE FOR WHO THEY BELIEVE HAVE SHOWN A GROWTH MINDSET AND THE WINNER WILL BE AWARDED NEURONE OF THE WEEK. THE CHILD WILL THEN HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHARE HOW THEY HAVE DEMONSTRATED A GROWTH MINDSET OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.

THIS BOOK WILL BE GIVEN OUT ON FRIDAY AND SHOULD BE RETURNED ON WEDNESDAY.

Homework - Maths

  • In Year 2 children do not have a half termly Maths Challenge.
  • The White Rose 1 minute app is a useful app for quick practise of number facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and Division)

  • As an Infant school, for the last 2 years we have purchased SATs booster books for each child.

(Maths and Reading Comprehension).

  • As a school we have found that these books have given the children and parents more of a focus for homework and have supported their learning in class as well as helping with the end of year SATs (more detail on next slides).

  • Each week children will be expected to complete the set pages per book.

SATs Homework books

  • for homework in Year 2.

  • Children will receive a stamp each week when their books have been
  • checked (we will collect them in weekly).

  • All Parents and carers are asked to sit with their child and help
  • them complete the pages, discussing new words and concepts.

  • We understand and appreciate that some children will find these
  • easier than others.
  • We ask that all children have a go with parental support even if they
  • only complete one page per week per book.

  • A letter will be sent in the coming weeks explaining how his system will work.

Literacy

  • Spellings have become more of a focus in the National Curriculum recently.
  • (for example: rainbow, peaceful, fossil and gnaw).
  • Grammar has a higher profile now in the National Curriculum which includes changing the tense of verbs (action word e.g. running) and identifying types of words in various contexts (e.g. London – is a noun)
  • All Writing tasks in school focus on grammar and sentence structure, punctuation , purpose and handwriting. We use pieces of writing from across the year that the children have completed independently to make a judgement on their writing level for the end of the Year.
  • Each child will be coming home at the end of each half term with their spelling card. There is no formal spelling test so please help your child to learn their words whilst at home.

SATs

Following the 2017 consultation on primary assessment, the government announced in July 2022 that end of key stage 1 (KS1) assessments will no longer be statutory from the academic year 2023 to 2024 onwards. The necessary legislative amendments have now been made and will take effect from 1 September 2023.

 Sunnymede Primary

  • SATS at KS1 (end of Y2) are no longer statutory but the government will still provide optional tests for schools to use internally. The results will not be published to parents and nationally. As a school, we have decided to do these for the following reason.
  • When children move to KS2 they complete 'test's each term to complement the on-going assessments based on their daily work. Completing these test are important as the end of KS2 test in Y6 are test based for maths, reading and spelling/ grammar/punctuation. The children, therefore, need to have practice in doing these tests from time to time. Therefore, the tests will be completed at the end of Y2 to give Y3 teachers an idea of how children do in written tests. Some children, believe it or not love tests! Others find them quite challenging. It helps us to see which children might need further support with written tests as they move to KS2. The tests will not be used to make a judgement about the level your child is working at the end of Y2 but will be used as a SMALL part alongside a whole host of evidence gained through their daily work. In light of the changes to KS1 SATs we as a school will decide on how we track and assess pupils progress in Year 2.
