Definition of translation
Translation is not only a product, but a process. Particularly a process of understanding both the target and source languages, their cultures and the context of the communicative situation.
Additionally, interpretation is a genre of translation. While translation is focused on the written process, interpretation is focused on the oral part.
However, in order to translate, one must interpret first.
If a language is made up of different symbols, one must know how to interpret them first, before transferring them into a secondary language.
Conclusively, translation is the process of conveying messages in a coherent and cohesive way.
