The aim of this presentation is to gather examples of blended learning in one place, providing an indication for educators (teachers, managers, ed techs, librarians, etc) of what is possible. And what others are already doing...

As education technologists we are often asked for examples, "just show it to me". Often you end up sending people to one site for one course example, and then to another article, blog or journal for another example. Sometimes it's like comparing apples with oranges. So I thought it might be useful to gather different examples in one place, to create a 'possibilities catalogue'.

You're invited to add your examples of blended learning to this catalogue. And if possible, use the template slide to make it easier for people to compare examples.

What do I mean by blended? Well, any blend goes really. Mixes of f2f with online, mix of technologies, mix of paper with tech, classroom work supported by technology, fully online...

  1. A set of projects based on whole-school themed learning. Planning of the lessons was based on the TASC Wheel (Thinking Actively in a Social Context) combining face-to-face discussion, activities and task guidance. F2F / online activities were chosen on the basis of which are most appropriate for each section of the TASC Wheel. A classroom with PCs and table space was used for teaching.
  2. Initial projects used the now-defunct StudyWiz learning platform. Later projects then moved onto our own Moodle platform. BBC Learning Clips were imported or linked, and a range of other vetted websites were included. Starter activities made use of online post-it boards, and online games were included as learning resources.
  3. Classroom interactions in small and whole-class groups were both teacher-led and independent tasks. Online activities involved forums, post-it boards, wikis and 'topic rooms' filled with teacher-selected resources.

Flipping Discussions to Teach Digital Writing:

Using a discussion centered online learning platform, students first learn to engage in respectful, substantive conversations online. Then they are placed into the role of facilitator designing multimedia rich questions using the various question types to structure interesting and varied discussions. The goal? Teach students:

  • digital writing
  • communication online
  • collaboration
  • critical thinking
  • leadership
  • adaptive expertise
  • creation of content

Collaborize Classroom is free discussion centered learning platform used to flip traditional discussions to allow students to design questions, facilitate conversations & work asynchronously on projects.

Blend: Students began slowly answering teacher designed questions and completing activities in groups online. Slowly, students began to experiment with constructing questions, incorporating media and facilitating online discussions and activities. By end of the school year, students are using Results Page to bring conversations and activities done online into the classroom to lead follow up debates, conversations, projects, presentations, etc. Goal: Student driven discovery of knowledge via dynamic discussions!
