Components of a Theory of Change
A Theory of Change explains how a program is expected to create the desired outcomes. It outlines the key steps and connections between inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes, often shown in a simple visual diagram.
Mission:
Intended Impact:
Inputs
Resources needed — e.g. participants, staff, resources, partners, policies etc. — to implement program as designed
Short-term Outcomes
Desired state, difference you are trying to make during in the short-term (e.g. within one year)
Activities
Specific actions/stages of work (e.g. ABC nonprofit actions that are expected to drive change)
Outputs
Immediate results of activities, (e.g. number of participants served). These are the “bean counts” of things.
Intermediate/Long- term Outcomes
Desired state, difference you are trying to make in the intermediate/long- term outcomes (e.g. after one year)
