Artist Statement, Hugo C.
“I’ve been creating art for as long as I could hold a pencil. What started as a hobby became a passion, and I continued pursuing art in school. Throughout middle and early high school, my greatest love was whales and dolphins (cetaceans). And so, most of my time drawing was spent learning and understanding cetacean anatomy. The way features varied across species and ecotypes, how the forms were altered in motion, and how the muscles and blubber sculpted the shapes I was seeing. In one of my AP Art classes, I created an entire portfolio featuring whales and dolphins.
However later on I realized that while I was extremely skilled in cetacean anatomy, my skills in drawing human beings were extremely rusty. By then, most of my peers had passed their “awkward” stage of drawing humans. I was still at the beginning. My frustration and insecurity as an artist skyrocketed. For the past few years, I’ve been focusing more on drawing human beings. This track was the perfect way for me to “catch up” with my anatomy skills. Thanks to Art Prof I feel much more confident as an artist
Doing this track gave me a deeper appreciation for the human body. There are so many complicated forms like fingers, feet, shoulder blades, and so much more. They all seemed extremely confusing like a massive jigsaw puzzle at first, especially after spending years drawing animals that lack arms, legs, and a neck. Yet when you begin to break the forms down and understand how they move and work together, it becomes clearer. Surprisingly I now really enjoy drawing hands and feet! But make no mistake, I still love to draw my whales and dolphins.”
