What is a Stereotype?
Discuss perspective. What are some things that might influence someone’s perspective? What are some things that people might see differently? Why do people look at the same thing but see it differently?
Ask your child, “What have you heard about how girls should play, what they should like, and what they should do? What about boys? Do you know people that don’t do/like these things? Why is it important that we don’t assume who people are, what they like, and what they should do because of how they look or identify?
Have a discussion about stereotypes. What is the problem with stereotypes? How can a stereotype that seems positive, like “boys are good at math”, be harmful? Where do you think stereotypes come from? How do they make you feel?
