Communication

Online classes mean more frequent contact with instructors via email. Here are some quick tips to help you better communicate with your instructors.

ODU ACCOUNT

SUBJECT AND GREETINGS

Always use your ODU email rather than your personal email.

Your instructor's Outlook account may tag your personal email address as spam.

Using your ODU email helps verify that you are who you say you are.

Put the course name and number in the subject line.

Avoid generic subject lines such as HELP, HELP NOW, or QUESTION.

SET THE RIGHT TONE

BE CONCISE

Be polite, respectful, and business

When starting the email, address the instructor as Dr., Ms., or Mr. and their last name.

Avoid starting with HEY or jumping into your message right from the start.

Keep your email short and simple.

If you have a complex question or concern, use the email to request a phone or video conference. This way your point or concern is addressed in a comprehensive manner.

No one likes to read lengthy and confusing emails. Read it before you hit send.
