International QGIS User Survey

We developed a survey designed to explore the opportunities and challenges of using open source GIS in the public sector.

​

The aim of the survey is to gather information and needs from open-source GIS users, primarily representatives of universities and public administration.

​

The results will be used to develop teaching standards, best practices, syllabi and educational materials tailored to practical needs.

Survey Distribution

The survey was distributed this spring via:

    • National QGIS user groups
    • The QGIS Newsfeed in different languages
    • Social Media

Results

  • 120 Respondents
  • Three big take away’s:
    • A majority of the responders were European based with around 76 % (Poland advocated for this very highly) followed by Africa with 11 %

​

    • The majority of people indicated to be Advanced GIS users and using QGIS (98.8%) as the main GIS followed by ArcGIS (40 %)

​

  • The technical domains are varying but the majority are based in Environmental management or urban/infrastructure planning
