What is Scrim Masters: World Championship?

With an established tradition of Scrim Masters tournaments, this 3rd one will not only be bigger than previous two, but one of largest competitive events done in Planetside 2. With 16 participating teams playing 62 matches over the course of 2 weekends the path to World Championship title will be tough and a grand spectacle to behold.

What is the tournament format?

When does it take place? Who can participate? How to sign up?

  • Tournament will take place over 2 weekends, from 1st - 3rd of September and 8th - 10th of September.
  • All outfits and players from EU and NA servers (Cobalt, Miller, Emerald and Connery) are eligible to participate. (PS Briggs players allowed; details below)
  • Teams will be signed up on 1st come 1st serve basis, though signup needs to be confirmed by SM staff to be valid.
  • Currently, there are 11 open spots with five spots already being taken by BHOT, TDL, CATH/TRID, MT and WIB/WOHA teams.
  • Tournament draft will take place on saturday 26th of August 2017 on live stream.
  • You can sign up on following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SsGMq-l2vT6hweQ-8xFPV0rUXRg275Hh1-EgKErr_8k/edit#gid=0
  • Team-captain/reps will need to join official SM:WC discord (https://discord.gg/98kueKd), while other team-members are welcomed (not mandatory).
  • PS BY SIGNING UP YOU ACCEPT ALL PLAY TIMES PROVIDED BY THE ORGANISERS AND THEIR RIGHT TO ADJUST SCHEDULE IF NECESSARY FOR TOURNAMENT TO RUN SMOOTHLY AND WITHOUT OVERLAP!

What are the team roster rules?

  • Up to 4 outfits can team up together to form a roster. Maximum number of players on roster is 20. Each team has the right to use 2 ringers.
  • All players/ringers and outfits from EU and US are allowed to participate. Single players from Briggs are allowed to ring for any team of their choosing.
  • Players on roster can be swapped out before and during the tournament, as long as the player being swapped has not played for any other team during the event or appeared on another team’s official roster.
  • Low level characters (<BR20) are not considered outfit members. Also, players recruited after 15.08.2017 are also not valid to sign up as outfit members. Players falling into former and later categories can still be signed up under (two) ringer spots.
  • To clarify with example: Team X has 2 ringers in official roster and counted on both to play match Y (aka has no reserves; #hypothetical scenario). One ringer can’t show up leaving team X with 11 players. Rules allow team X to substitute missing ringer with a fresh ringer/player (that wasn’t on team X sign-up roster) up until 45 mins before match start, AS LONG AS THAT PLAYER HAS NOT PLAYED for any other team during the event OR APPEARED on another team’s official roster.

Under which ruleset will the tournament be played?

  • Tournament will be played under Scrim Masters rulebook, that can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NfXZJXgMcmAL0NP9BA6hpfzC5-BOODPgvC0Kxr-sCzY/edit
  • As per rules: Scrim Masters organisers have final say in all matters. In case of disputes specific OR all team captains can be consulted either over discord OR teamspeak meeting.

Other (new) organisational stuff:

  • With SM:WC we are introducing the ban system for maps:
    • Teams will be able to use their bans only in the knockout stage, with group stage being done same way as on previous events!
    • Once in knockout stage each team will have the right to ban 2 maps.
    • Two coin tosses will be done. 1st coin toss will decide who gets to ban maps first and afterwards map roll happens. Next up is 2nd coin toss where winner chooses either faction or starting side while loser choosing whatever remains.
    • Teams won’t be able to use their bans for the 3rd place and final match as they are taking place at a pre set 3 or 4 point base.
  • Life Draft will take place on 26th of August @1800 UTC live on Twitch (twitch.tv/sme_official) with a traditional team captain meeting just before the draft starting @1630 UTC.

Tournament structure, map pool and rule enforcement:

  • A more detailed tournament structure and specific match dates can be found on page 5 (next page).
  • Introducing with SM:WC is also official “Map pool guide” while shorter map overview starts from page 6 onward:
  • ALL TEAMS NEED TO EXPLAIN RULES TO THEIR PLAYERS (gameplay rules and bans, map peculiarities, etc.)
    • Anyone playing match is presumed to know rules and behave - ignorance will not be an excuse.
    • Referees will be strict and WILL impose time-outs for players breaking rules during matches.
    • In case of further deliberate rule breaking OR explicit bad intent OR malicious drama creation, further sanctions can be applied from organisers.
    • Further details are explained in Scrim Masters rulebook: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NfXZJXgMcmAL0NP9BA6hpfzC5-BOODPgvC0Kxr-sCzY/edit

Tournament format and match schedule:

  • Group phase:
  • Teams will be placed in four (4), four (4) team groups.
  • Teams will play round robin, a total of three (3) group matches for each team; each match in group phase will be Bo3 (best of 3).
  • Each round will last 15 minutes and be a tug of war between a cap and re-secure; cap OR team with more influence after 15mins wins round.
  • Maps for the opening rounds will be drawn at the tournament draft, while all other maps will be random rolled at latest 30 mins before the match.
  • Each win will bring 2 points; won/lost rounds ratio will be tracked and taken into account if teams have equal number of points; if teams are equal on that aswell a last/more man/s standing an all HA death match round (5 minute) will be played at map of referees choosing (map where no team is playing).
  • The top two teams from each group will proceed to playoffs (quarters/semi-finals, 3rd place and final match).
  • Playoffs/knockout phase:
    • Winner of one group will play 2nd place team from the opposite group and vice-versa.
    • Playoffs are played by double elimination, with winners of quarter-finals proceeding to semi’s while losers playing among each other to gain 2 winners among them.
    • Winners of semi-finals proceed to the final match.
    • Losers of semi-finals play against 2 teams who won their matches between the quarter-final losers. Winners of these two matches play the 3rd place match.
  • Hope Trophy:
    • Hope Trophy is a side competition in which all of the 3rd and 4th place teams from initial group phase compete together in a single group.
    • They retain points earned during initial group stage and play all other hope trophy teams, whom they did not have a match during initial group phase (they won’t play against the team they were in the initial group with).
    • The team with most points after all matches are done will be Hope Trophy winner.
    • 2 teams with most points play Hope trophy final on Waterson’s/Octagon.
  • Detailed tournament scheme as well as match times and play dates can be found here:
