Instructions for Year 1

  • The first person to fish in the spring will be the person whose birthday comes first in the year. After that you will each take turns going clockwise.
  • You only get one turn per season.
  • You can catch between 1 to 3 fish. Remember you MUST take 1 fish to feed your family. But you CAN take 2 or even 3 fish.
  • Make sure not to eat your fish yet. You will need them for later.
  • Lastly, there is NO TALKING allowed when you are fishing.

Questions for Year 2

  • How can your community do better this year than it did last year?

​

  • What rules can your community create so that everyone can catch fish, but there are still enough fish in the lake for future seasons?

​

  • What happens if your lake has been overfished and you have too few fish? Will you reduce the number of fish that everyone can catch for the next season?
    • Example: What if your lake has less than 8 fish at the start of the season?

​

  • What will happen if someone breaks the rules and catches more fish than is allowed? Will they face any kind of consequences for breaking the rules?
    • Example: What if a fisher catches 6 fish? What if they pretend they have fewer fish?

​

  • If a problem comes up in the community, how will your community solve it?
    • Example: What if your group disagrees on using a new rule or changing a rule?
    • Example solutions: Voting? Rock-Paper-Scissors? Or something else?
