Guidance for videos

12 of 39

Investing in #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers has the potential to save millions of lives.

  • Expanding primary care has the potential to save 60 million lives, increase life expectancy by 3.7 years, and promote health equity. But to do so, a more robust health workforce is needed to provide services to communities around the world.
  • Global leaders and donors need to invest in supporting and protecting health workers now and address health workforce challenges, not after the next pandemic, or after conflict and climate change has further intensified our global health challenges.
  • African leaders and other key funders and policymakers should commit to participating in the African Health Workforce Investment Forum that will take place in May.

We need increased and more targeted advocacy to ensure every community has access to #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers to provide access to primary health care and to prevent the spread of emerging health threats.

  • There are many global, regional, and country commitments to safe and supported health workers but policymakers need to translate promises and policies into long-term investments and integration in health systems.
  • Continue to advocate for health workers and share these messages at the global, regional, and community level, including during the Africa Health Workforce Investment Forum and World Health Assembly in May.

Key Messages

Increased investment in #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers is crucial for achieving SDG3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages). With at least half of people around the world still lacking access to essential health services—including maternal care, HIV treatment, family planning, and vaccines, the rising tide of noncommunicable diseases, and the ongoing threats of emerging diseases and climate change, building a robust health workforce must be a priority from the global to community level.

  • Advancing universal health coverage (UHC) necessitates increased health financing for workforce training, recruitment, development, protection, and retention.
  • To achieve health for all, ensure an equitable response to health emergencies, improve gender equity, and more, finance ministers, other policymakers, and donors must make long-term investments in the global health workforce and enact gender-responsive policies to support and protect them.
  • Governments must mobilize domestic resources for health workers to bridge funding gaps and international donors can support these efforts.

#SafeSupportedHealthWorkers are the backbone of high-performing and resilient health systems, making them an essential investment for achieving global health and development goals.

  • Health workers–including nurses, midwives, and community health workers–are essential for expanding health services and reaching universal health coverage. They play a critical role in disease prevention and management, as well as in supporting strong economies.
  • All health workers–including nurses, community health workers, pharmacists and others –need to be well-trained, provided with supportive supervision, and adequately compensated.

14 of 39

Many health professionals are not #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers, and don’t receive the respect and appropriate working environments they need, leading to a lack of skills development and demotivation. This contributes to inequitable access to high-quality health care.

  • Many health workers, especially women, are underpaid or not paid at all. Women in the health sector face a 24% gender pay gap and 86% of community health workers in Africa receive little or no compensation.
  • Despite a surplus of unemployed health workers in several low- and middle-income countries, many countries struggle to meet the international minimum target of health workers per population. The WHO projects a global shortage of 10 million employed health workers by 2030, with Africa representing nearly half of the shortage.
  • Health workers are leaving their positions or migrating because of poor working conditions, inadequate pay, lack of respect and recognition, and more. According to the WHO, ~15% of health and care workers globally are working outside their country of birth or first professional qualification. Escalating international health worker migration threatens health emergency response and the achievement of UHC in several countries.
  • Health workers risk their safety and lives to provide care during disease outbreaks and conflict, and many still lack protection from outbreaks, and violence and harassment. One in 4 health facilities lack basic water services; 1 in 5 have no sanitation services.
  • Incidents of violence against health care, from the bombing of hospitals to kidnapping of health workers, occurred in more than 30 countries/territories in conflict in 2022. Attacks on health workers in places experiencing have widespread impact on public health programs and access to care.
