Review of the 1st Session:

Christians need to form their faith on sound biblical doctrine, which is the firm foundation upon the solid rock that is Jesus Christ.

The Reformation reaffirmed that our justification (our being made “right”) before God is by faith alone… not based on anything in us or work we have done. Salvation is by God’s sovereign grace and not by the will of men and women.

The Synod of Dort responded to the Arminian Remonstrance pointing out its errors. The response has come to be known by the acronym “TULIP” also called “The Five Points of Calvinism” after the prominent theologian John Calvin.

The Five Points of Calvinism are a summary of biblical teaching on salvation, called “The Doctrines of Grace” and are often misunderstood and misrepresented by opponents.

The “T” in TULIP stands for “Total Depravity” (Radical Corruption) which is the biblical teaching that in Adam we all fell and every aspect of our nature is impacted by sin. The natural state of humans is that we are spiritually dead in our sins and unable to save ourselves or even respond to the divine call of salvation by ourselves.

The “U” in TULIP stands for “Unconditional Election” which is the biblical teaching that God has sovereignly chosen whom he will save from before the beginning of time and that his choice is based solely upon his grace and not subject to anything but himself.

Review of Session 2

The “L” in TULIP stands for “Limited Atonement,” meaning that the while atoning death of Jesus is unlimited in its value, it is limited in its aim. Jesus died for those God the Father had given to him. His death really serves as their sin sacrifice and assures their redemption. The Good Shepherd truly laid down his life for his sheep. The preferred term is “Definite Atonement” because the atoning death of Jesus actually redeemed all who are his for salvation and did not redeem those who would never believe.

Verses like 1 John 2:2 (ESV); “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world” are not referencing every person in the whole world, but all his sheep form every part of the whole world, from every nation, tribe, and tongue. His atoning death actually and completely satisfies divine justice and cancels the sin debt of all for whom he died.

The “I” in TULIP stands for “Irresistible Grace,” which refers to the fact that God the Holy Spirit, through the grace of regeneration, changes the heart and will of a person to an awareness of their sin, to desire Jesus Christ and the salvation he brings, and brings them to repentant saving faith in Jesus Christ. This is not against a person’s will, it is the gracious transformation of the will unto salvation. The preferred term is “Effectual Calling.” All whom God sovereignly elected to save from before the beginning of time will be regenerated unto repentant saving faith in Jesus Christ.

A proper understanding of Scripture requires interpreting passages within their context. Taking verses out of context can lead to error or even heresy.

People are free to do what they desire, the issue is that the unregenerate heart does not truly desire God - that requires regeneration.

1 Peter 1:3–5 (ESV); 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In Summary, The Doctrines of Grace Proclaim...

God’s amazing grace is shown in that even though all humans are sinners by nature and are born spiritually dead since Adam’s fall from grace, reject the one true God, are inclined toward evil, are incapable of true and pure righteousness, and deserve only the justified eternal wrath of the God whom they deny, the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is determined to rescue those people upon whom he has sovereignly chosen to bestow the unmerited grace of salvation.

From before the beginning of time, God the Father selected people, according to his own will, to be given as a gift to God the Son. God the Son (Jesus Christ) took on a human nature and willingly died on a cross to atone for the sins of all who were given to him, accomplishing their redemption.

God the Holy Spirit transforms the hearts of all those for whom Jesus died, bringing them from a state of spiritual death and bondage to sin into a state of spiritual life and freedom in Christ, this spiritual rebirth produces repentant saving faith in the Lord Jesus and a desire to live for the Lord Jesus. God the Holy Spirit dwells within those who have truly been saved and ensures that they never utterly fall away from faith and will live eternally with the Lord.

Salvation is truly a matter of God’s Grace. To God Alone Be Glory!
