MEIG Rechartering

  • MEIG charter ends on 30 April 2023 (extension needed cover the rechartering)
  • Draft charter: https://w3c.github.io/media-and-entertainment/charters/charter-2023.html
  • Key changes:
    • More realistic success criteria
      • Not all suggested outcomes are required for success
      • Participation can be via mailing list or GitHub issues
    • Change “adherence to” to “implementation of” in:
      • Engagement and coordination with other organizations in the media industry to promote implementation of W3C standards
    • Change “tighter support” to “improved support” in our mission statement “to achieve a tighter support of media services on the Web”
    • Added Audiovisual Media Formats For Browsers CG to list of W3C groups to coordinate with

Media Source Extensions

  • V2 scope proposed limited to features already defined or agreed:
    • Codec switching
    • MSE in Workers
    • ManagedMediaSource proposal: w3c/media-source#232 and explainer document
      • Make it easier for media web site authors to support streaming media playback on constrained capability devices
      • Allow User Agents to react to changes in available memory and networking capabilities
      • Reduce the power impact of MediaSource APIs
    • Priority bug fixes

Audiovisual Media Formats For Browsers CG

  • Initial meeting at TPAC 2022 (minutes)
  • Draft charter in preparation: https://github.com/w3c/avmedia-formats-cg/pull/2
    • “The scope of this community group is to provide a forum to discuss features of open and commercial audio-visual media formats that are relevant with web-technologies used in browsers, TVs, and Smart TVs. In particular, this includes identifying and reporting if and how individual formats and their features are referenced, can be called from a web environment and query necessary information from a host system in meaningful ways. The interplay and synchronization among different formats is also considered”
