For my project I chose to focus on enriching my students vocabulary in a creative and long- term way.
The inspiration for this project came out of the need for students to learn new words but also being able to use them and remember them. Most students come up to me and say they can’t learn so many new words since the books don’t engage them. By creating an interactive learning environment where they create and use the words and later present the words to the class they see the words come to life.
In addition, by doing this activity on a regular basis with my class I get my students eager to learn since they are allowed and encouraged to interact with classmates they may not know do to Covid.
In conclusion, two factors are met: social interaction and learning vocabulary.
Who the initiative is for:
This initiative is meant for my 7th grade class in my school. For those who are learning “Way to Go” books.
The contents of the initiative:
The content of the initiative is Way to Go unit 2 vocabulary.
Partners in leading and presenting the initiative:
Stage 1: In the first stage the initiative will only be conducted by me in one of my classes.
Stage 2: if it will be successful other teachers will incorporate it into their lessons.
For this project there will be some preparation and steps.
Step 1: The students are told that they will be learning a new set of vocabulary words this time in a different way. They will be told that the words are vocabulary words from their book (Way To Go) the second unit.
Step 2: Each pair will be asked to pick 10-15 words from unit 2. They will be asked to create either:song ,game (memory game) ,story ,play
Step 3:After creating one of the options the pair will present it to me in order to make corrections.
Step 4: pairs will be asked to switch games and stories with each other. Those who created a play or song can perform to one another a
This project can change the way teachers approach teaching vocabulary by taking the words out of the textbook and into the real world. By allowing and motivating students to learn the words through a creative process they hold on to the new words for a longer time and can use them in their everyday lives.
I believe that their needs to be new kind of "book" for learning vocabulary that uses different activities to learn the words and not how it is currently learned in class. I’m currently working on developing such a program which I hope to use next school year.
