Context:

  • Master’s degrees in the US universities are :
  • Through the College of Education (M.Ed)
    • No content, practice of languages and cultures, lack of preparation for the Praxis.
  • Through College of Humanities (M.A)
    • Heavy on literature/culture
    • No preparation for the licensure

Why another master’s degree program in French?

  • Needs for teachers in French immersion program in Utah.
  • Idem in the Bridge program.
  • In World Language programs.
  • In programs outside of Utah

→ preparing teachers with content and offering licensure

Why such a combination?

  • Program offers a graduate degree in French that equips candidates with excellent language and pedagogy skills, along with solid subject matter knowledge.
  • Be able to teach French at the secondary level and, if endorsed in Dual Language Immersion, and be able to teach in K-6 as well.
  • Program housed in the World Languages & Cultures department; students complete their license coursework requirements and prepare for their practicum and student teaching through the College of Education.
  • Practicum: College of Education with consultation with me.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in French or French Teaching, or an equivalent.
  • Solid level of oral and written French

Some numbers:

  • Program started in 2019
  • 4 students have completed the licensure part (1 to be a WL teacher, 3 in DLI).
  • 4 other French teaching students have completed the M.A part without licensure. But then had to complete another pathway to get licensed.

→ The most popular program in French in the Department.

Able to use the $10,000 to pay for their summer tuition and the last year of courses.
