introduction

  • COVID-19 outbreak has become an eye-opener for the world.

  • The situation has made wearing a mask mandatory lifestyle for us.

  • This has surfaced some unanswered problems and we are providing a solution to one of the most viral COVID-19 consequences.

The Problem

01

Do you wear spectacles?

Did you face any problems?

The problem

Wearing a face mask together with spectacles makes your spectacles get foggy. This has been a problem for some communities from a long time, but for majority of the public this was a consequence of COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, this has become an everyday struggle for spectacle wearers when a face mask is worn with their spectacles.

Why do glasses fog?

  • When hot air falls on a cool surface, the air particles condense and form small water droplets.
  • Simply put, this is called fog.
  • The same thing happens when you wear glasses with a face mask. As your warm exhaled air exits from the top unsealed gaps of the mask, they tend to form fog on your glasses.

But Is this a real problem?

  • To validate the design idea from the consumer’s perspective we conducted a small survey before initiating the design process.
  • The followings are some responses collected from the survey.

Conceptual Design Idea

  • The main reason behind the identified problem is the condensation of the exhaled air on the glasses.
  • The easiest way to prevent this phenomenon was to seal those gaps between the nose area and the mask.
  • The Mask Brace was the best approach to solve the problem.

What is a mask brace?

  • A Mask Brace can be used to provide a better mask fit.
  • This helps your face masks to fit more tightly on the face.

17 of 28

Why is a mask brace more suitable over other fog-free products

  • 100% fog-freeness

  • Re-usability

  • Compatible with all most all the face-masks available in the market

  • Easy to handle

  • Comparatively high affordability

  • Stretchable and flexible

  • Safer than using fog-free chemicals

Design Solution

  • The people who use spectacles face the daily struggle of foggy glasses which blocks the vision of the user.

  • The aim was to create a device to reduce the gaps between the face and the mask.

  • A Mask Brace suited the most as the solution and liquid silicone rubber is planned to use as the basic raw material for MB 1.0.

20 of 28

Why silicone rubber?

  • Excellent insulation properties.

  • Low bio and chemical reactivity and toxicity because it’s a natural material.

  • Because of its low glass transition temperature (Tg), it is flexible at room temperature.

  • More durable than other materials because of high mechanical properties and thermal properties such as heat capacity and high tensile strength.

Feasibility

Current International Market

  • Fog free mask ⇒ 3000-12000 LKR
  • Fog free sprays(50g) ⇒ 3000 LKR
  • Shipping cost from overseas ⇒ 300-500 LKR

`

MB 1.0

  • Cost for raw material for one unit will 50 - 70 LKR
  • Local companies confirm that one unit will cost about 90 LKR for manufacturing.
  • Price in market will be only 200-250 LKR
