DEIJA Definition

EQUITY

A process that requires taking different people’s needs into consideration to distribute resources and create opportunities accordingly.

INCLUSION

The active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity in ways that increase awareness and create a culture of belonging for people of all identities.

DIVERSITY

Diversity is the representation of our varied differences, collectively and as individuals, based on aspects of our identities.

ACCESS

The process of ensuring that there are equitable and inclusive entry points and resources for all members to fully participate.

JUSTICE

Accessibility and Intersectionality

Giving equitable access to everyone along the continuum of human ability and experience. Accessibility encompasses the broader meanings of compliance and refers to how organizations make space for the characteristics that each person brings.

ACCESSIBILITY

Framework to understand how multiple power dynamics and systems of oppression are operating simultaneously—often in complex and compounding ways—and must be considered together in order to have a more complete understanding of a person or a social group’s experiences in the world.
