Course Description

and Objectives

Students will read and write daily through a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for success in English for high school and beyond. We will use inquiry and collaborative methods to spark creativity and develop critical thinking skills which will prepare students for high school and the workforce. The classroom environment will be a place that fosters a lifelong love of reading.

The following topics will be emphasized: fiction, drama, nonfiction, poetry, literary analysis, research, writing, and grammatical skills. If you meet the district criteria at the end of the course you will earn one English credit, and be eligible to enter English I in the 8th grade.

Textbook

Class novels will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for students to check out. Students are always welcome to purchase their own copy to annotate.

We will be using HMH student textbooks and grammar workbooks. These books will be kept in the classroom

Electronics Policy

Personal electronic devices should be turned off during the school day per district policy. Devices should not be out during class, unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. For every instance a student has their personal devices (including but not limited to: AirPods, wireless headphones, cell phones, iPads, etc.), they will receive a referral per Bryson Middle’s policy.

First offense: Student will be given a warning.

Second offense: Student will be written up.

Personal devices are to be turned off between the hours of 8:00-3:15 each school day.

FOOD & DRINK POLICY

In general, food and drinks are not permitted in my classroom with the exception of water in a school-compliant water bottle. Candy given to students by myself will be allowed.

Grades will be updated in PowerSchool as regularly as possible. Assignments that require a written response such as projects and essays will take longer than 7 days to be entered into the gradebook.

It is the student’s responsibility to check Google Classroom, ask a classmate, or their teacher for help on making up any notes, and/or to meet with Ms. Hawkins to make up any tests, quizzes, or papers.

ASSIGNMENT FORMATTING

All typed assignments must be in 12 PT TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT, double-spaced, and have 1” margins with your name, class period, and date in the top left corner with a centered title.

We will follow the MLA 9 format for all major writing assignments.

HOMEWORK

Students should read 20 minutes every night.

Some concepts will be taught using a flipped classroom style. Students are expected to review the material or take notes prior to class. In class, concepts will be clarified and applied to actual work.

Most work will be able to be completed in class if students use their time wisely. Some work may need to be done outside of classes to finish incomplete classwork or projects.

  • Students will stay on-task and participate in class.
  • Students will come prepared to class with their binder, a pen or pencil, and ready to learn.
  • Students will be on-time to class.
  • Students will enter, pull out their notebooks, and start on bellringer located on the board.

PLAGIARISM/CHEATING

BMS does not tolerate plagiarism or cheating. Students caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive an automatic GFA and a discipline referral per school policy. Subsequent offenses will result in further disciplinary action. AI generated work is considered plagiarism.

RETAKE POLICY

Students may retake a minor assignment/quiz if they score below a 50. Students may retake ONE major assignment per quarter, but will be required to complete a request to retake form, and complete relearning activities in order to qualify for a retake.

The form needs to submitted within five days of receiving your grade.

  • The teacher will monitor and adjust classroom procedures and schedule as needed.

Consequences

Minor infractions will result in a LiveSchool point deduction or silent lunch.

MAJOR actions receive major consequences – referrals or being removed from the room by an administrator.

YOU are responsible for your own actions. Positive behavior will result in classroom coupons, positive LiveSchool points, candy, or a positive call home.

RESPONSIBILITY and preparation

It is your responsibility to:

  • come to class prepared
  • charge your Chromebook the night before
  • interact and contribute positively to class
  • clean up all messes
  • take responsibility for YOUR learning – mindset matters!

Late Work Policy

Students are expected to make up missing/late work as soon as possible. After three days past the missing assignment due date, it will be marked as NHI (Not Handed In). Students will be expected to fill out a late form for every late assignment they submit after the turn in date. Students are not able to turn work in after the cut off date (5 school days AFTER the due date).
